Using a long-range extender with R-Pi

Hey guys, Raspberry Pi complete newbie, I'm not really looking to get into the hobby (although I feel i may get sucked into it haha) I'm just more trying to make this one useful device using a Raspberry Pi.

So I want to use this long-range extender to connect directly to my Raspberry Pi and use the Pi to either create it's own wifi network using the existing network OR to simply extend the network.

The reason I need this is because I'm running various versions of Linux that are not compatible with those long-range extenders but if i can get a wifi network available inside my home that'd be great! Or is it more trouble to get this long-range extender to be compatible with the raspberry pi?

These extenders are just signal boosters, can not see the version of Linux should make a difference, also the one you pointed to is older 54G, and not the faster "N" According to http://www.amazon.co.uk/Alfa-AWUS036H-8 ... B002WCEWU8 the WiFi adaptor has Linux drivers.

What is your present set up ?

Yes the RPi can be configured as a WiFi range extender, in most homes a fancy pants aerial should not be needed......

I want this to be completely separate from my wifi however, I can't use that connector i linked to grab free wifi that's very far away and then shoot it out through my raspberry pi so my other devices in my home can use it?

You will need to bridge the two wireless adaptors, beyond my scope, but it seems that it has been done as several posts on this forum.

Have you looked at powerline and Cat5 cables?

With the right WiFi adapter and by running hostapd you can turn your RPi into a wireless access point.

Okay so the one I originally linked is "AWUS036H" and under the working wifi adapters page the AWUS036H works.
So that eBay package SHOULD connect with the raspberry pi correct?

If I am right then I should be able to do this? http://elinux.org/RPI-Wireless-Hotspot

If you are using two WiFi Adaptors you will need to Bridge them, one has to be input, the other output...........

Err Yes I got the part that I need to output/input them, but the eBay one I linked works as one input adapter correct? I just need to grab another adapter to output?
