Sonic screwdriver

I'm thinking of making a sonic screwdriver with an R-Pi though I think it would only be like having a universal remote (being the fact that I would only be able to control remote based technology, but I can dream). It would look just like the real one and make the same sound, it would be interesting for like minded people.

Could anyone think of a way I could make it more like the one from the tv programme, regarding usability? For example using or disrupting computers or unlocking doors.

I'm not sure the form factor will allow for it - isn't a SS skinnier than a credit card? Had you considered making a tricorder instead?

I will have to make it bigger than the original then. More research needed. As for the tricorder, that may be the second project though I haven't the foggiest how I would get that to work.

How about an original series communicator -- incoming message sound effects at random times and random comm clips from the show when you open it? All you'd need is a small speaker hooked up to the audio out and a connector between the flip-top and one of the switches.

That would be interesting. Especially if you are on the bus or train and everyone is messing about with there ipods and you get that out. I think there will be alot of staring

Or perhaps you could attatch that 12MP camera to it and have it do augmented reality or something.

+1 on the tricorder. If I'm looking at the specs right, it should easily fit inside of a toy tricorder casing, or if you can find one/make one, a case like a prop maker would use.

...I'm 'toying' with LEGO case builds for my RPi [merely because I have parts to make one - why buy?] but would welcome the availability of a Ziggy case - it's already an app as seen on http://andaps.com/appid140896 - but for the serious user with this small concession towards levity, a portion of the case would be a touchscreen and a skin for the interface could continue the look of the case into the desktop environment - same RPi functioning, all new futuristic look
