Possible to connect Ninty DSIXL Top Screen to Pi?

Sat Oct 12, 2013 5:33 pm

Is it at all possible to connect a Nintendo DSi XL top screen to my Pi?
I'm happy to help.

I guess what we'd need to know is, what sort of interface does the Nintendo DSi XL display use? That's what would determine whether or not it's possible to hook the display unit (I'm guessing that you've found them being sold as spares online?) up to a Raspberry Pi.

That said, at a resolution of 256x192, if the intent isn't learning how to do this, would it not be much easier to use one of the similarly-sized displays that are available from, for example, Adafruit, which start at a minimum of 320x240 and offer standard inputs?

Oh, ****. I just wrecked a standard DSI. Let me reccall the stats..... Ribbon cable, I think some kind of plug? (Click Here for a link to top screen on Amazon). The connector (see amazon link) looks like it may be compatible? Also, I'd rather use a DSI XL screen rather than an Adafruit one because it is MUCH thinner.

I'm afraid that that's not the information required - a lot of displays have a ribbon cable with some sort of plug. ;)

What you would need to know is what "language" the display essentially talks - that's what determines whether or not it would be possible to use it. Some standards that I know of for this (it's not a field I know a lot about, though - I've just picked up tiny snippets from reading things around here) are LVDS and DSI (which is of no relation to the Nintendo DSi  ), for example. If it's something proprietary, then there's little chance of you being able to use it with anything other than a Nintendo DSi.

"May be compatible" with what, though? It may well be a custom connector, and even if it isn't, the above matter of how the display communicates is really what's key.

Ahh, I see. :) Well, I wish you the best of luck. I'm afraid I can't find any information out there about what interface these displays actually use, and I honestly don't know how to proceed from that point.

EDIT: Come to think of it, perhaps there might be something over in the Interfacing section of the forum?

Something like this has been done before - it looks very difficult, probably impossible without spending less than other screens that size. If you really want to, search jumbotron ds into google.

Yes, all of the jumbly wires.

I mean compatible with the UNHEPFULLY named 'DSI' connector.
