Digital audio out

Hi!

I'm new here and planning to buy a RP as a audio server (squeezebox server).

I have a HIFI amp and are concerned about sound quality. So I would like to get the audio out digital and send it to a good HIFI DAC.

Can RP output digital audio? And through which port? USB? HDMI?

Thanks
Ole

The problem with HDMI is, that no DACs have HDMI input - apparently because of copyright restrictions.

How easy would it be to connect a DAC via USB (get audio out of a USB port)?

Also, how does the RPi perform if I connect a hard drive with HD flac files to one USB port and a DAC to the other USB port? Do you think that there will be problems with bandwidth etc.?

Or, use a hdmi audio extractor, and send digital coaxial/optical out to you favorite DAC.

Some HDMI to VGA converter have a stereo DAC, but dont know if support studio audio quality. And others have a spdif out, coaxial or optical.

player like omxplayer don't send audio do usb adapter or other alsa device, it send direct to internal audio router/driver (jack or hdmi).

This review and other posts on this blog were quite helpful to me... (the author is also mentioned in the raspify link cited above because he is behind the ODAC).
