Power via gpio

Am i right to assume if i hook up a 5v supply to the 5v pins on the gpio it'll power the RPi fine? it seems that the only micro usb cable i have is a cheap one which is way too thin

Yes, BUT! you bypass the fuse so it is more risky.

somewhat relevant: is there a general-purpose FAQ on the wiki somewhere? This should be in it. I know of the "Troublshooting" page but it isn't as good a fit there I think.
