I've written a short review which may be of use to potential purchasers of the PI and also to those of you looking to introduce your children to them.

Sorry you did not have a go at teaching your kids Python using the Debian distribution as is. Can't get much more kid friendly, or responsive, than that. Don't run it hooked up to the Internet... Thinking of it as a first choice for Internet browsing is probably not a good idea.

Keep in mind that this is a developer release - give it 6 months and I think you'll find general performance, stability and software library will have increased.

One point - part of the beauty of this project isn't that getting your Pi up and running is part of the fun.  Gettings kids to understand the guts of a system rather than just how to use the tools.

But you make a good point overall - people need to ensure their expectations are set correctly.  Don't throw out your current PC just yet

Not too common, but there are USB chargers with a built-in power switch:

Looks good, but I can't see anywhere to buy one in the U.K. unfortunately.

What''s wrong with a switched socket? – that turns off the 230Vac side, and even with efficient switch-mode supplies, saves more power than simply disconnecting (switching off ) the output side

Note to 'overseas' readers: – UK 13A Ring Main or Extension Lead sockets often have an adjacent switch which removes the power from the adjacent socket, without the wear and inconvenience of removing the plug from the socket; it even leaves the earth connected- in case of lightning strike (if it is an earthed-appliance)
