Wifi hotspot with webpage

Thu Aug 15, 2013 3:41 pm

Hi everyone,

I am looking to create a wifi hotspot from my raspberry pi that is disconnected from the internet, on the PI would be installed a web server with a joomla installed on. As soon as someone connects to the PI's hotspot i want the joomla website homepage (that i have created) to be displayed.
So that i could use it in remote places to give information, documents... etc to people who need it

I know how to make a web server on a PI
I know how to setup a joomla website on a web server (i believe it is the same on a PI)
i have never attempted to make a hotspot from my pi
i am not great at using the pi

SO, if anyone could give me instructions or links as to how to setup a hotspot, which hardware (dongle or router) is best and how to prompt users to arrive on my webpage?

Thanks!

I just used this site to setup my RPi as an AP. Works great for the project I am working on - my laptop connects to the RPi's SSID and then I ssh from the laptop into the RPi (don't have a monitor/keyboard connected to the RPi)

To do this you need to setup a proxy. Squid is a popular linux proxy that can do some fun stuff (http://www.ex-parrot.com/pete/upside-down-ternet.html). The last time I set this up it was a project in and of itself and I wasn't even trying to be cute and mess with the users traffic. But, it can be done!

Really late but you can install a hotspot with a captive portal and link your portal to a Joomla instance

Look at this script to get all up and running except the joomla instance that you will have to install in the portal folder in place of the existing one

Kupiki Hotspot : https://github.com/pihomeserver/Kupiki-Hotspot-Script
Raspberry Pi Home Server : http://www.pihomeserver.fr
Software and electronic tutorials : Samba, Airplay, CUPS, Time machine, Nginx, Owncloud, rTorrent, Wordpress, etc.
Full Wi-Fi hotspot installation on a RPi 3 including a captive portal and freeradius management: https://github.com/pihomeserver/Kupiki-Hotspot-Script
