Hi,

I have been reading a lot on the net lately to figure out what kind of codecs the RP will be able to play but I couldnt find any satisfactory solution.

Will the RP play any 1080p mkv or "just" the ones with DTS as it has hardware acceleration for it.?

Specifically, are there any known issues yet with some codecs?

Thanks for any help in advance

Kind regards, Kiesel

Once everything's up and running, it should be able to play h264 mkv. To play 1080p in real time, GPU acceleration is required. The Raspberry Pi foundation has licenced h264, but there are other codecs for the bcm2865's GPU. These aren't included in the Debian image, but least some of them seem to be available though, see http://www.raspberrypi.org/for.....y-support/

Whether it can play an mkv file depends on the underlying codec. It ought to be able to play any MPEG-4 (Part 2) stream you're likely to encounter, and H264 up to High profile level 4.2. It will *not* be able to play "10-bit" H264 though.

Audio is decoded on the Arm, so any audio codec available for Arm should eventually work on the Raspi. However, 7.1 surround does take almost all the CPU power!
