Best SD cards for 24x7 use

Mon Aug 05, 2013 9:52 am

Hello

I use the raspberry pi on a 24x7 basis. I seldom switch it off. Which SD card is the most sustainable for 24x7 operation. Kingston have adviced not to use the card for 24x7 because it will wear and tear relatively quickly.

any suggestions?

If you want the most reliable operation there is an excellent case for holding the root file system on a USB stick and only use the SD card for booting. The very nature of SD cards is that they have a limited (albeit quite high) number of write cycles they can support. You can get micro USB drive that hardly protrudes from the USB socket. You would also only need a very small SD card as only the boot partition files would then need to reside on it.

Thank you. I never considered using a USB. Something worth trying out!

no issues with the SD card [well.... ]
but if your worried you can put the rootfs on an external HD / USB drive, it's not really necessary

Do you reboot the SD card every once in a while?

mainly for updates and to add stuff - this RPi has a texy LCD screen on it also though there have been a few power cuts where it lives
I also tend to use it for developing random stuff; it's an original version
[I have 4 RPi's in general use]
1 as a media center [rootfs on ssd - for size and quietness]
1 as a surveillance system [with camera and rootfs on a 650GB 2.5" drive ]
1 Model A as a test / camera system
1 red raspberry Pi as a general testing system - currently hooked up to the model A via serial leads
...

the ones with the root fs on an external HD have a slightly more responsive feel to them .
I'd not use a USB stick as rootfs personally - extra space maybe ...
as for life of sd cards,
I've got a 16Gb on in a car DVR which has been working for 6mnths and that gets re-written completely about once a day

late edit.....
use it and see how long it lasts for you

but all my phones and tablets have SD cards in them all the time.

why would it be a problem keeping them powered on all the time?

phones keep the cards connected all the time.

the only time the card wears is when it is written to.
dont worry about it.

I have five pis and I never turn them off.

solar you are right. A smart phones uses the micro SD and I have never heard of it corrupting.

That means that maybe it has something to do with the software

AFAIK the rootfs of a mobile phone OS does seldom
reside on a SD card (which vary wildly in quality) ... and
for example Android uses special filesystems like YAFFS , JFFS or
F2FS . I think if you use an additional SD card the separation
of user data and OS helps. And mobile OS are designed with
Flash wear in mind , not like Debian for spinning disks.

You can also have a look through this list;

I have a class 4 SD card from Jessops which runs a 24/7 Pi. Although most of the time it's idle.
