Ha ha, sounds like I've may have made another nood mistake then ;)
Did the updater change any files within /lib/modules/?
I haven't installed or updated any other packages since the 'fudge'.

Thanks for the heads up.

first post first day using rpi so this might need to be taken with a pinch of salt as im also using the pi headless so cant see whats happening too well.

this seems to recreate the issue
1. load debian6-19-04-2012
2. rename boot_xxx_.rc to boot.rc
3. boot rpi
4. update /etc/dhcp/dhcpconfig
5. update /etc/network/inf for a static IP 192.168.1.60 etc
6. sudo apt.get update
6. sudo apt.get install ca-certificates screen byobu git
7. follow rpi-update instructions to download and run the first time (which also created the above /opt error)
8. reboot fails

The network looks like its thrashing or polling for something. Let this running 5 minutes before giving up to reflash the SD.

Any ideas? im able to test but with only 1 card would hope others to assist to prevent me from restarting all the time.

I probably posted this in the wrong thread so I'll link to it here as well.

Arch users looking for rpi-update, here you go: http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewt ... =25#p95235. Sure you get the updates quickly via pacman but its so nice to switch ram usage in a single command :D

@purg
If you do all the listed commands except the rpi-update does reboot work?
Can you take a copy of loader.bin, kernel.img and start.elf before running rpi-update.
If rpi-update stops it rebooting, try reverting (one at a time) those three files.

Nothing seemed to work but fixed the problem with an unexpected method....
Original SD card was a 8Gb micro SanDisk... just by using a different card fixed the problem.

rpi-update ran with same errors everyone seems to get but rebooting didnt hang using a Sandisk Ultra 16Gb card. The RPI (or the cards) seems to be very twitchy when it comes to the SD cards used.
Thanks for help

Hi

I'm trying to PUTTY into my Pi and updating it, but I can't seem to be able to install the package.

I've tried sudo wget http://goo.gl/1BOfJ -O /usr/bin/rpi-update && chmod +x /usr/bin/rpi-update

and got as far as downloading it, but then chmod gives an "operation is not permitted" error:

chmod: changing permissions of `/usr/bin/rpi-update': Operation not permitted

What am I doing wrong?

Try putting sudo before chmod.

sudo wget http://goo.gl/1BOfJ -O /usr/bin/rpi-update && sudo chmod +x /usr/bin/rpi-update

I ran rpi-update twice last night on my current setup of squeeze. It crashed my RasPi. I reinstall the copies of the boot SD and it was fine. Rpi-update again. crashed again. All I got was the raspberry logo and nothing else each time. My screen size looked like it changed also for the logo. anyone else have this problem?

After the update can you look at the files on the boot partition of sdcard? I'm guessing something has got corrupted. Possibly cmdline.txt.

Lob0426: What exactly do you mean by "crashed"? Do you mean that your RPi actually reset/froze while running rpi-update, or do you mean that after successfully running rpi-update, your RPi failed to fully boot after you manually reset it?
If it's the former, could you tell how far rpi-update got (i.e. what it'd printed) before it crashed?

The update completed on restart all I saw was the splash screen and then raspberry logo. No text at all. The resolution appeared to be off as the logo was larger than normal. I left it running fo several minutes but no progress. No HDD activity and no SD activity. So firmware loaded then the logo shown then nothing else. As I stated before I went through it all twice same results. Copied boot back to SD and it is back up and running. Rootfs has some corruption now as I cannot get sound to load with modprobe command, I get errors. No errors before. So I will have to go to wheezy or start over with squeeze now.

@Dom: I will try rpi-update again and see if any of the files are corrupted.

Tried the rpi-update again (debian Squeeze) just a while ago, now it is booting. I am having a black screen when I shutdown X. I turned up HDMI boost to 4 but no change. Do not understand why it would not work last night.
