HDMI Power issue?

Wed Jul 10, 2013 6:18 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm using the raspberry Pi with the PiFace.

Sometimes, i repeat, sometimes, like one time on 10 times, my screens turns off and says 'NO SIGNAL' for one second, and then the screen turns back in the previous state. (all windows opened, nothing lost of data,).

So it just seems like the screens makes a blackout for one second.

I tried without the piface, and even if we turn on or turn off a 50W spot sometimes the screen turns off.

I think the HDMI output is closing when there's a power/current peak on the same circuit?

Anyone who has the same problem? And any solution? Placing a condensator to increase the power peaks?

Thanks alot in advantage for your respond.

Sincerely,

Lander

This one might also be worth a shot.

Code: Select all

config_hdmi_boost=4

My guess is that it's a monitor problem rather than a Pi problem.
I have a fairly similar problem here - the central heating boiler fires up and the monitor dies. Not so much a problem in the summer.

No other monitor or TV does it.
The one that does does it with any input including off-air.
Nothing else causes it - I haven't tried a different boiler
It does it where-ever I plug the monitor in, through-out the house, with or without mains conditioning gizmos.

And no, I haven't got a solution

Hi Burngate
Wow, that sounds like you've got a damp or dying/dead motor inside the boiler
I would seriously consider giving British Gas a call and getting them to service it properly, they'll do the work and give you a guarantee too. Just give them a call anyway to get a quote, it's probably worth it.

A work around though may be to power the monitor from an ATX psu that has an extra socket for plugging in a monitor.
The psu may shield the monitor from the power fluctuation. See the lower socket in this pic.

I must admit to slightly over-exagerating for dramatic effect.

It doesn't always happen, and when it does it's only a slight glitch. It took weeks to determine it really was happening, and that it was the boiler doing it, and another several weeks of carting monitors and TVs around the house to prove it was only that monitor, on any mains socket.
I contacted the installer, and he had a look, and everything is ok

I was thinking of moving everything next door to see how far away the effect happened, and I was thinking of getting a UPS to drive the monitor.
And I was thinking of hooking the scope to the mains to see what's happening

But you know what? I got bored with it all

This issue was solved by another HDMI cable!

The reason was probably the poor quality of the HDMI cable.

Glad you solved it.
I solved mine by getting a new monitor. And a new boiler.
