wifi without usb hub needed

Thu Jul 04, 2013 12:55 pm

I need a wifi dongle that doesnt need a usb powered hub. I m gonna run my pi headless.
After searching on net. I found best ones : Airlink 101 Wireless N 150 (AWLL5099) , Edimax EW-7811Un USB WiFi
But these are out of my budget. Plz suggest me other wifi dongles that dont need hub & come under my budget upto- INR 750.

I m a bit confused- Which is the best one under my budget. I m concerned about compatibility with pi and most important-the performance & connectivity, network issues.

I'm not sure where you are looking at prices but on Amazon UK the Edimax one is less than £9.

Is that any help?

You can. There are a lot of people who us Pi's with just the USB Wifi adapter plugged in.

But nobody can tell you if THIS particular one will work. Even when it's the hardware specified by the type number, it might just draw a little too much current.

Don't worry, buy one of the suggested ones and test it with your Pi. And keep your fingers crossed :D

If it can help you, I have used these 2 wifi dongles without a hub :
TP-Link TL-WN725N Nano http://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B008B7PZU4 (very small but needs a specific driver)
TP-Link TL-WN721N http://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B005LMM0L4 (bigger but support hostap mode)

I use this without a hub on my headless pi, but only on the Model B Rev 2 board. The Rev 1 Board requires that the USB fuses be removed or by using a "Y" splitter cable to draw power from both USB ports.

That works for me, staright to Pi USB.
I also have two WiPi adaptors supplied by Farnell that also work directly connected.

This is on Model B rev 1 and Model a & B rev 2.

It may depend what power supply is used. If the voltage is marginal plugging in a USB load could cause problems.

What is the rating of your Power Supply? I mean, how much amperage do you provide to the Raspberry Pi?

Well the TL WN_721N works great for me without a USB hub you just have to plug it before boot. Also I have a tutorial for configuring it on my blog for anyone to check out.

Probably most will work if you raise the current to the USB ports.

I personally got the following results with the very popular and cheap ($12 CDN) TP-Link WN725N
When directly plugged into the PI under the basic setup I was only get LAN transfer speeds jumping around in the range of 1 - 2 megabytes/second but when I set max_usb_current=1 the LAN transfer speed jumped up to 11.2 megabytes/second which is the same my notebook gets and finally allowed me to stream raw Blu-Rays.
