Is there any distributor who sells the PI for the original 35$ price?

The lowwest I saw was 41$+S&H

No price hike. In the UK, Farnell and RS should be selling at the equivilent of $35 + S&H. Any other distributors may well be putting on a markup, but RS and Farnell should be $35.

In Australia, Element14 is selling for $41 +S&H, which comes to $56. When they originally went on sale, they didn't charge for shipping, so the extra cost was justified as built-in postage fee. However, now they have started charging for shipping and still kept the same base price.

Is that something that should be fixed or is the $35 price only for the UK?

Edit: Just checked and RS prices here are about the same.

Model B prices may be that, but RS in the UK are charging roughly $31 for a Model A, whereas CPC are charging $25.

Edit - Model B prices on RS work out to US$40 plus P&P. So it's only CPC that have the correct pricing and they have FREE delivery.

I have just checked the UK price and it's £28.07 + postage, which is over $USD 40 as well. So, what's up with that?

Edit: I know there are taxes as well, but taxes in Australia don't fully account for it either.

Maybe we can get an official response from someone from the Raspberry Pi foundation?

The FAQ page still states that the price is 35$, I think this should be changed (truth in advertizing!)

I also think the foundation should make distributors who sale sell the Pi for a higher price to detail on that they are charging the premium.

Some digging around later...

If you go to au.element14.com and search for raspberry pi, you are taken to http://export.farnell.com/rp/order/inde ... egion=apac and when you select Australia, you are presented with the $41 price.

However, if you search the SKU directly, you are taken to a product page with a $36 price. On top of that, they add the $13 for shipping and $5 tax and the final price is $54.

Long story short, there was no price hike. $35 for the pi, $5 tax and the rest for shipping. There's a bit of 'creative accounting' going on by element 14, since they are charging GST for pi+shipping together rather than just the pi, but it all adds up to something close to the fair price.

The Pi A at 20ukp, ex tax and p&p from RS is 31.15usd ATM. The equivalent Pi B is 40.49usd. In the UK, RS branches don't stock them, but you can 'click and collect' for next day collect in a branch at zero cost p&p, so just plus 20% vat on either model.

I have just noticed something else. Element14 does free shipping on orders over $45.

So, $36 pi + $9 case, + $5 tax = $50 for a pi and a case delivered to your door the next day. Hell of a lot better than the initial $56 for the pi alone.

It would be better is the third party distributors in these poorer countries were not trying to price gouge. Where the Foundation see the official distributors making unnecessary mark-ups RS or Farnell are told about it (sometimes the subsidiaries don't get the memo and apply their own pricing). The Foundation has no control over other distributors.

Although the Foundation vision isn't to bring computing to small emerging countries, it's to bring computing to everyone.

I take away two conclusions from this (1) the R-Pi is quite a bargain at its official price given many vendors are able to sell above it, and (2) it is not so common for electronics of this type to have the final consumer list price set by the manufacturer, instead of the distributor.

Farnell are OK to use it as it was actually taken with them in mind. But not some price gouging no-mark from Amazon.

With Allied Electronics & RS Components, there has DEFINITELY been a price increase.

Bought Model A on 15 May, and price was GBP 15.93 (excl. VAT and taxes), which if I remember well, would translate to USD: 25.00.

Tried to buy same one today, and price is GBP: 20.00 (excl. VAT and taxes) or USD 31.80.

As to model B, it is today (19 June) GBP 26.00 or US$41.34.

Now, same site, same delivery address, basically nothing changed.

Although from GBP 15.93 to GBP 20.00, that's only GBP4.07, it's actually a 25% increase, which is a lot.

Would it be possible to get some comment about the price hike from someone from the foundation??

I'm seeing free shipping included in that price. If you look at the higher volume breaks, the shipping cost amortizes out and you end up back at $25.

you will see drakongetes is correct. There are no quantity price breaks (that I could see) for personal customers, even if you had a business account you still need to buy 10 PIs to get close to a $25 PI.
A Pi on the 'personal use' page is £20 + VAT + shipping (£4.95 + VAT).

http://www.cpc.co.uk have the correct prices (correct as in $25 and $35), £16.21 ex VAT for one Model A and £23.39 ex VAT for one Model B.
http://www.cpc.co.uk also have free shipping on all orders, regardless of size.
