In The MagPi #13 http://www.themagpi.com there is a great article on running the Archimedes version of Elite on your Raspberry Pi with RISC OS.

While everything in the article is correct, there are a few gotchas so hopefully the following will save you some time.

1) Installing RISC OS is easy but if you don't have a UK keyboard you'll want to change the keyboard setting. Double-click on the !Configure icon then click on the Keyboard icon. Change the keyboard to your locale.
2) RISC OS is a great OS... and it behaves differently to Windows and Linux. When you double-click on an application to start it (eg !NetSurf) it might seem nothing has happened. But look in the bottom right corner of the Icon Bar. Your application is running... just click on its icon in the Icon Bar to open it.
3) When downloading ArcEm, make sure you download the RISC OS version (ie arcem-1.50-riscos.zip) and NOT the default Windows version.
4) As described in the article you will need to click on "direct link" to download ArcEm. However on some mirrors the file type is not set to Zip. You can tell this happens because the download icon will be green with the word "Data" and not a folder with a zig-zag. To fix this follow the instructions on page 19. After dragging the Data icon to the SD card, move your mouse over it and click the Middle mouse button (scroll wheel), choose "Dir. 'arcem-1/50-riscos'" -> Set type -> then change Data to Zip (ie type Zip).
5) When you unzip the ArcEm file you will see two folders. Open the "Apps" folder, then the "Misc" folder. You will see 3 files (!ArcEm, COPYING and hostfs). These are the only 3 files you need to drag into the ArcEm folder. You can ignore everything else.

That's it.... everything else should be easy. Hope this helps save some frustrations and time.

Regards

Well, I'm having problems with AreEm installation.
I have the ArcEm directory with the !ArcEm file, and hostfs folder.
I have downloaded the ROM, set unprotection and data,
renamed to ROM, and placed it in the ArcEm folder.
On running !ArcEm I get a black screen with response
'could'nt open ROM file'
the rom file is marked WR/r 2048k Data in Full Info.display.

where have I messed up?

ArcEm is version 1/50-alpha2-riscos
Rom came from Support2 folder as described.
