filesystem corruption - unstable raspberry

Wed May 29, 2013 7:59 pm

I don't know why, but Raspi is totaly unstable for me. I'm angry, because after installing new package - my SD card is totally corrupted. The system files are totaly damaged. I have to clean SD card and install raspbian distribution again. It is not first time.

Hardware:
recommended SD card - Sandisk class 4, 8 GB.
raspi 512 RAM
usb hub - self powered
usb disk - self powered
tv card - in self powered hub
overlocked - 950 MHz

I tried to connect GSM dongle and install asterisk. I enclose my dmesg during the instalation asterisk. When I saw erorrs in dmesg, I tried reboot raspi. Data are completely damaged and filesystem is not bootable.

There is no problem with power supply. I tried it before by multimeter. From time to time, I had some data corruption on sd card. But now is completely damaged. Maybe it was matter of time.

I have several Raspi. There is data corruption on all sd cards from time to time. I can't rely on Raspberry. My raspberry is powered all the time.

Does anybody have the same problem of data corruption? How is it possible??

Can you reproduce this without the USB hub, disk and TV dongle?

Also can you reproduce it with the overclocking?

If so it would be good if you could send the SDCard + Pi to us at Pi towers so I can finally reproduce the problem and maybe fix it! Will send a new one out...

Some questions... What are you using for a power supply? What gauge and length are the wires that supply the power to the Pi? If you are powering the Pi and other devices from a USB hub, what is the current rating on the USB hub power supply?

The only time I had SD card corruption is when I set overclocking on. I had corruption within minutes. Never had a problem at normal clock speed.
I would suggest to turn overclocking off.
Unless specified otherwise my response is based on the latest and fully updated Raspbian Buster w/ Desktop OS.

I have the same problem that the SD files corrupted! and I don't know why

I installed the asterisk again on the SD and after finishing setup extensions and while i editing some thing in the trunk from the web interface it didn't response and after restarting the pi and try to login from web I got this:

FATAL ERROR

To reiterate what a previous poster said..... I got my second rpi recently and trying to run it with the same sd card, power supply as my first rpi, resulted in file system corruption. The only fix was to turn off over-clocking. I suggest you try this. If it works with no over-clocking you can then try the various over-clocking settings until you find the fastest stable setting.

The simple fact of the matter is that not all rpi's are created equal. Some are more sensitive to dodgy power supplies and over-clocking.

Please,

If you have a Pi / SDCard / Power supply combination that this happens on (fairly reliably) can you send it to me and I'll send out a new one for you?

Unfortunately otherwise it's never going to be fixed! I just haven't been able to reproduce the problem at pitowers...

PM me and I'll get your details...

Thanks

Gordon

Please, what is over-clocking and how to close it?

Overclocking runs the chips faster than they normally go. It's disabled by default, so if you don't know what it is you are unlikely to have enabled it.

If you want to be sure, you can change the setting by entering the following into a command prompt:

Code: Select all

sudo raspi-config
This will produce a menu of options, one of which is 'overclock'. Select that.
'OK' past the warning screen that appears.
You then get a list of overclock settings. Select 'None' and 'OK' that.
Then exit the program, selecting 'Yes' when it asks if you want to reboot.

Hi Gordon, thank you for reply. I'm trying to find, how to reproduce steps to SD card corruption.

After data corruption on SD card, I formatted SD card and install new system - everything was connected - TV dongle etc.

After 1 day - new data corruption. Raspi is overlocked - 950 MHz.

Next try - formating SD card, install new system on this SD card. But non of my Raspi's can't boot from this SD card. I change SD card - it's serveral days and everything is working. TV dongle is still connected.

Now about damaged SD card. A tested badblocks on corrupted SD card - nothing found. After several days i formatted corrupted SD card and Raspi's is booting from this card. I'm confused. Maybe it's bad SD card. I will try to find, how to reproduce sd card corruption, but I will need more time.

I had SD card corruption before. On other Raspi and on other SD card. It was still random - Raspi was overlocked, non overlocked, with usb hub and TV dongle, without usb hub and TV dongle.

I think - it's not problem on my own Raspi. At first - I have to find, how to reproduce steps, to SD card corruption, and than I can send you my Raspi, SD card or everything, what helps.

USB power suply, voltage is between 4.75 and 5.25, 1A. USB hub is self powered with power supply 5V,2A.

There was 1 TV card connected into the hub. There are 2 devices conected into the hub.

as I sad, I have new SD card. I was testing new tv dongle connected into self powered usb hub. So 2 USB dongles.

Instalation OK, TV working good, dmesg (no memory card corruption) - 1 hour working. After that i test rebooting.

First reboot, then dmesg:

SD card was little bit damaged. Fsck repairs everything.

After that - configuring system and severals reboots. 5 reboots OK (nothing in dmesg and everything works). It look's like, that I have everything done. The last reboot (6th) - after that, my filesystem on SD card is damaged. Missing folders: /usr, /etc

there is my dmesg after 6th reboot:

Re: filesystem corruption - unstable raspberry

summary of my usage my Pi:

self powered hub, tv dongle, usb disk, no datacorruption after reboot - it looks like stable. It runs maybe 1 or 2 months (without rebooting).

after rebooting and changing usb dongles - prying is needed. Sometimes is ok, sometimes - damaged sd card.

When you say "rebooting" are you using the "shutdown" command or just yanking the power off?
Despite advances in Linux file system software it seems yanking the power is a recipe for disaster.

Anyway, I await an answer to this question because as of now I have been through a dozen cards in half a year that have all ended up in terminal failure. As in, nothing can format or write correctly to them.
Memory in C++ is a leaky abstraction .

good thought, but I'm rebooting by typing: sudo reboot
so - standard reboot - not yanking the power off

That just leaves us with advice about power supply quality. I have tried a few and measured them to be within advised limits. Still SD cards of different sizes, classes and brands continue to drop by the way side. I really have to give up when "dd" tells me it cannot read back what I just wrote.

Mind you it's noy just the Pi I have a couple of other types of ARM boards here that also eat cards for breakfast.

What to do?

I have used about 20 model b units and the problem is fairly consistent when using debian 2013-09-25 distro and any over clocking. Reduced occurrence without over clocking but still often enough to be a problem and definitely when power is lost.

Returned to previous version, march 2013, and no over clocking and the system runs great, even survives power loss. All systems running 24/7 365 and stable. I won't attempt to upgrade until a new debian distro is available.

By the way system load under the earlier distro is lighter. I would be interested to hear if anyone else has seen the same instability with the current debian image.
