ARM Super Computers?

Sun May 26, 2013 9:27 am

There does exist a "super computer" built out of 32 (I think) Raspberry Pis. When shown that many will say it's stupid because all those ARMs give you no more performance than a desktop PC. (Never mind that it was not built for performance reasons anyway).

However today comes this nice story about the use of ARMs in super computers:

Seems the builder of the Raspi super computer was just preparing for the furure:)

I agree. If you replaced the Pi CPU with something more modern (fast quad core ARMS) you do start to see decent price/performance ratios. Next gen Arm chips will be even faster.

It's the interconnect that will be the issue, requiring boards designed for the purpose rather than general purpose devices like the Raspi.

jamesh,

The raspi is part of this revolution. Millions of people tinkering with cheap ARM machines. Some of them will be the builders of future super computers. And they will be ready to accomodate such "radical" ideas.

By the way, recent discussion here about calculating pi on the Pi indicates that the Pi is already doing very well on the price/performance curve. Not to mention power/performance or size/performance.
