The best additional feature that could be included on the board is quite literally nothing - so lets drill some holes!!! There must be a 3mm gap somewhere to put one? Any Ideas....as to where?

Answered else where - it's a four layer board with NO space for holes what so ever - just because you can't see a component on the surface doesn't mean there aren't routed connections under it!

It's actually 6 layers but that just goes to accentuate nmcc's point, there's so much on the board that they couldn't fit it onto 4 layers and had to bump it up to 6.  The current solution is to use clips to hold the board.

wow 6 is actually quite cool.  though in the early 80's we were pushing out ICL2966 mainframes with 22 layer motherboards, half an inch thick as I recall - designed and manufactured right in the UK too, in the plants at West Gorton and Kidsgrove!

You can find out where the middle layers are if you shine a bright light through the board

At least on the places where there are not massive ground planes.

Edit:

or maybe not, I just tried on a 6 layer board I had around, you'll need a VERY bright light for a 6 layer board

I'll have to see if I can get Pete to x-ray one of the production boards in the machine he has at work and send me the video - he's a busy man, but I'm sure I can twist his arm. (I suppose that's a bit like using a very bright light…)

If you are desperate for holes you can always remove some part to make place. e.g. remove the Ethernet plug and drill a hole where that used to be. Make sure you do not short any layers when drilling through. Or even better, there is this big black plastic square in the middle which nobody knows what it is for. Just drill straight through that!

They're being a bit serious on this thread. No-one seems to have got my Beatles reference.

No, sorry... I'm afraid you are going to have to explain that one (well to me anyway!) as it isn't one of their better known recordings!

I thought at first it might be Strawberry (as opposed to Raspberry!) Fields Forever... but it wasn't!

Not even a song which I recognised either... and I thought I knew most of them!

It's off that little know album, Sgt Pepper! Whenever anyone mentions holes I always think of A Day In The Life. If you don't want to hear it all skip to 3:00.

Ah... right! I know the album, but not the song!

I could be wrong but I don't think that many folk will have picked up that subtle link.

As you say though, we don't want the Forum posts getting too serious, do we!

Exactly how many holes does it take to fill Albert Hall again?

The Sea of Holes bit from Yellow Submarine might have been good... "Hey Jeremy, what do you know about holes?" "There are simply no holes in my education!" Oddly enough, there actually were enough holes there to fill the Albert Hall. Why the Beatles thought this needed doing, I have no idea...

I love how many people want mounting holes so bad.  Is someone mounting their R-Pi inside a paint mixer or a marital aid?  I would bet that for 99.9% of all uses edge clips, tension setting, or adhesives will work just fine.

I second what Gert said just drill through that black square that says Hynix on it.  That should hold it in place.

What is this 'edge clip' of which you speak? The edges look chock-a-block too! I still think holes would be a good feature to include in the model C.

You can mock the silent majority for their hole yernings, but the board needs to be held securely when periferals are plugged-in and un-plugged. For hobbyists like me without a 3d printer and extensive cad experience, holes are useful.
