Sounds like RS / Farnell have taken on the distribution and done the initial sales and then introduced conditions.

Hope i am wrong but that the way it seems. Not impressed if that is the case.

I should also point out that I've badgered Eben into spending a little while answering the comments that come for that post, so head over if you've got a (relevant) question that needs answering.

However pleased I am to see this news, I feel my heart sinking as I read down the comments and see complaints.  Like "What?  You've only shipped 2000?  Why have you done that?!".  Good thing Eben's there to sort it out.  From what I can see he has a lot more patience than I would have right about now!

He's mostly doing it because right now I am wild-eyed and getting a bit punchy. Not the best mood to be answering comments from people who can't ******* read in!

Or a glass of wine, and a evening to put your feet up and do sweet f.a. and not have to answer questions from those not bothering to read or search.

Liz & Eben, best of luck with the certifications! No need to respond to me but I hope you guys will consider the below idea or something creative.

Please see this page: http://www.am1000rangemaster.c...../kits.html

I will quote FCC"s response from it:

The kit does not require equipment authorization to be marketed (sold) but they would still need to comply with the limits set forth in corresponding sections of part 15. The responsibility of compliance lies on the user, or the person who assembles the parts together, not on the manufacturer.

I suspect UK/Eu have something similar?

Probably too late for this but I am still wondering if you can sell it in a `kit' form by leaving out some critical component *we* can solder on. This would a) give you more time for FCC/CE certification and b) weed out non-developers from the initial set of users. As it is, I fear supporting a large number of non-developers at this early stage will take up a significant portion of your time and slow down your response to developer questions. The "Pi does need some more "baking" before it can be presented to your target audience of school kids so slowing down non-developers is not such a bad thing (though there will be a lot of whining!). There is another reason for slowing things down: hopefully this will never happen but what if you discover a critical problem after shipping a couple hundred thousand 'Pis? Any recall at that point would be a total catastrophe.

But may be it too late and you just have to surrender to the tornado of demand!

FWIW.

People seem to be fretting about radiated EMC, but isn't ESD zap more of a showstopper, if the bare board has to pass CE?
(I have a handy EMC chamber & zap gun, if you need some late-night precompliance doing in Cambridge…)

(Sorry, can't post to the real thread, from any browser, for some reason)

I dare say Granny would fret, if her pacemaker stopped working when Johnny showed her his new Pi.

There's also an update to element14's FAQ about it, which you might find interesting. I'm adding small updates like these to the original post at http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/878 - if you're interested in the little things we're doing on this, it's worth keeping an eye on it.

Thanks Liz, but perhaps you could clear this up for me?

Element14 say, in their update:
2000 Raspberry Pi’s are now in the UK. Pictures are posted here for anyone who doubts their existence!

That wording is perhaps a little ambiguous. For the avoidance of doubt, can you confirm where and when the linked picture was taken? It was originally supposed to have been in "the factory" ( by which I at least had assumed was the factory where they were assembled – in China? (although check the power sockets – UK standard? – hence a question in one of the posts about the factory being in HK)

Maybe it"s because I"m "wound up" over the "let"s see how many holes we can pick in a comment" brigade, so I might have misinterpreted this post, but perhaps just so that people feel they have the full facts, we should also know the temperature and humidity at the moment the pictures were taken, the GPS co-ordinates, which employee was blowing their nose at the time and who had what for lunch!

Brand and make of camera, focal point, ISO used and whether any post processing was involved.

It is sad to say, but in my experience sometimes giving "timely" information is just as fraught as not giving any information at all.

It's a picture from the factory - I do have some pictures of the pallet full of those same Raspberry Pis once it got here, though, which Jack took (I am afraid he did not take it next to a photograph of the day's newspaper and a cucumber sandwich to demonstrate he was in England). I'll stick them on the main page tomorrow if I get a moment.
