Thu May 16, 2013 12:49 am

I just recently purchased this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003MT ... UTF8&psc=1 wifi dongle and it works fine, but it lacks the range i need. do any of you know of an adapter that will give me the best range? This wifi dongle works fine when im in the same room as the router but otherwise doesnt work in any other rooms, im using it with openelec but i also tested it in raspbian.

The AirLink 101 seems to be a top performer. I use it and have no range issues.

Have a look on ebay for the RT5370s with an antenna. They work pretty well, I have one acting as an AP and I can access the AP from the other side of my house

thanks for the recommendation. i just purchased one off amazon for 8.99 shipped we'll see how it fairs, my house is pretty congested with wireless activity and this little nubbin with no antenna just isnt going to cut it.

I bought the same one and the range/reception was terrible; maybe I had a bad one. I switched to a TP-Link TL-WN722N and the range is absolutely incredible. It is so good that I bought a second one. It has a removable antenna which allows you to add an even higher gain antenna, or reposition the antenna for better reception. It also supports packet injection. Works out of the box with the Model B Rev 2 board and the latest version of Raspbian. The Alfa AWUS036H 1000mW model also has a long running reputation as a device with fantastic reception and supports packet injection, although it is only a b/g device; their newer products have questionable reviews, so that is why I chose the TP-Link. The TL-WN722N, as with several other of these high gain devices, require one of the following with the Model B Rev 1 board (A powered hub, the usb fuses bypassed, or a Y splitter cable drawing power from both usb ports).

Attaching a short wire of approximately 1 inch to the circuit board should give you a range boost I did that trick to one of my micro bluetooth dongles.
The other alternative is to construct a homemade parabolic antenna - http://vatavia.net/mark/cache/usbwifi.orcon.net.nz/ :D
