CLI output of webcam (i.e. in ASCII)

Hi everyone,

I'd like to be able to see output from my webcam (either live video or a single frame) on the command line.

I've been misunderstood elsewhere, so I'll reiterate: on the command line, via ssh (putty), as ASCII, I don't want to stream anything, I don't want to save a jpg or mpg or any other file.
I'm certain this is possible (because I've got very close a couple of different ways*), so if you don't think it is please don't say so.

If anyone can help it'd be hugely appreciated!

*- I won't mention which yet, in case they put people onto the same trail as me.

jp2a <- is able to convert a jpg to ASCII

If the webcam works with v4l then you could open it with vlc.. VLC automatically outputs "ASCII-Art" when started over ssh

Yep, that's the option I've had most success with.

But .... It only draws a few frames, seems to always update only the area circled, and then hangs.

The pi is then usuable (in a different ssh session), but vlc uses ~91% cpu and is unkillable!
