Need to get a web browser binary and can't use apt

Mon Apr 22, 2013 3:58 pm

My university applies a rather annoying first-time gateway which appears whenever I first connect a device to the network. I cannot access -any- DNS, because it forwards everything to the "netreg" server. The netreg server presents a html page where I must enter a username and password to continue. Once this is done, I can use everything as normal.

So, I need to download a basic web browser in order to do this, however, I cannot find one that does not require apt-get to install... which requires internet access. How do I sort this out? I would guess I need a binary that someone can provide or link to me. Any browser that lets me submit a form is fine. Any suggestions?

I don't really understand the problem. The "wheezy" image contains "midori" web browser preinstalled.

You haven't said what operating system you are using.

If it's Raspbian, there are 3 browsers installed by default - midori, dillo and netsurf.

I don't know how they do at forms support, but have you tried them all? Maybe you don't need to install anything to get started?

If that doesn't work, and you know what browser you want to install, there are ways of installing debian packages without direct internet access - but perhaps we can keep that until you know there is no other way.

I'm using openelec which boots straight to xbmc, but I'm able to ssh in so all I really need is a text browser like lynx.

I have no direct experience of OpenElec. Perhaps someone who has can help better.

In the absence of that... I can't see anything on the openelec website about modifying it. Since you mention apt-get, do you believe that it is based on debian and thus can install .deb packages?

The debian package is here - http://packages.debian.org/wheezy/lynx-cur but note that it has very long list of dependencies, so not being able to install it via apt-get looks as if it might be frustrating?

Could you temporarily get your RPi to somewhere with an internet connection you can use, just to perform the update?

It does look like openelec doesn't want modification; it doesn't have apt-get or dpkg. So, I have decided to give another OS a try, at the moment I am trying raspbmc.

OpenELEC does seem to allow add-ons, but they do not have apt-get and there are very few add-ons at this point for OpenELEC on the Raspberry Pi

Someone in Arch reported compiling a version of Netsurf, maybe some of what he posted may help you

Maybe you could ask what dependency packages were needed? His is a modified version, so it may not have them all, but maybe he knows.

thanks for the quick reply ... I posted over there too.. Netsurf is much faster than midori but
it sort of does not support gmail .. as a matter of fact you may lose gmail authorization and have
to redo your passwords.. so I was hoping that v3.0 would be better ..

I have had good luck with links browser with gmail. If you want speedy access to gmail, that is one way to go, it provides the html view rather than the fancy one with all the bells and whistles. Surprised you are needing to reset your password just because of a change in browser. I visit gmail from various computers, browsers, ISPs, depending on how I go in, and never have to reset my passwords there.

There are several versions of links browser. I do not like the Elinks version, installed the links one using Arch on my Pi. But also use links browser to access gmail from other linux boxes as well without any problems. What is important is that ssl is built in to the browser, if there is no ssl in netsurf, I believe it will not get you into gmail.

gMail is implementing two factor authentication, starting with the USA. So, depending on where you are from, behaviour of the gMail HTML pages might be different.

I had never before seen the SMS security feature either. But a couple of days ago, I changed browser on the same machine. Google detected the change and insisted on sending me a verification code over SMS. It's free, and fast and works very well as a security measure.

Oh that feature, I assume you mean the one where you have to give them a cellphone number? I do not have one, when I run into those popups, I give up and go back and log in from the other, regular machine. I never get far enough to need to do a password reset because SMS is a foreign thing for me.

I have gone through 4 password changes since using netsurf on my RPi in the past 24 hours. Not Happy with Google Services at this moment in time.
