raspberry pi - is it fruity (about to buy first slice of pi)

Tue Apr 16, 2013 7:12 pm

Hi I'm about to buy my first slice of pi (mmm, yum) and I'm looking for opinions and advice, so this post might have more than one question.

This is what I plan to buy:
  • Rasberry pi Mobel B
  • 1500v psu
  • 16gig sd with wheezy preinstalled
  • powered usb hub (believe is needed for external HD)
What I plan, or would like to do with my tasty slice of pi:
  • Overclock it within an inch of its life - has anyone got a detailed link on this? (i'm aware of relationship between APM and sdram (seems similar to multiplier and bclk in x86 rigs, but am i right in thinking gpu can be oc'd seperately)
  • Use ipad as wireless keyboard over Lan - is it possible to use vnc/splashtop or something similar straight from boot - I believe it relates to ssh or something like that, but need to research that
  • Use external usb HD to watch movies etc - is there a way to get external HDs to mount automatically, have read that I would have to mount manually
  • and finally could i use a spare USB stick to setup a swap file
Any advice on the above will be appreciated.

Hope you're not just buying this slice of pi ;).
1500v psu
Hmmm... hope you like fried Pi. I assume you mean 1500mA, though
16gig sd with wheezy preinstalled
Don't buy a pre-installed card. It seems that a lot of them still use ancient versions of the firmware, which quite often cause problems with recent Pi models.

There's some info here: http://elinux.org/RPiconfig#Overclocking (including which settings are linked).

Auto mounting is no problem, just add an entry in /etc/fstab
and finally could i use a spare USB stick to setup a swap file
It would be far more efficient and probably faster to move both the root file system and swap file partition to the external harddisk.

Seriously don't bother with the preinstalled SD card. It's very easy to install it yourself. Use berryboot when you do :)
note: I may or may not know what I'm talking about...
