Think I have been ripped off :(

Sun Mar 31, 2013 11:55 am

Sorry to make my first post a negative one, but I thought I would share my tale of woe with you all. I was trying get my pi configured to use on wireless and was not having a great deal of success so say the link to http://www.raspberrypi-tutorials.co.uk/ ... -download/

This looked ideal as the wireless option and some other useful stuff was included, I paid my money via paypall and was then presented with a link to github I tried to download the links but the files failed work.

I have tried to email both sales@ and support @ email addresses and both have returned with Delivery to the following recipients failed

So will take this forward with paypal.

Happy Easter all anyway.

Ian

A bit hard to tell. The whois entry for the domain looks OK. I'm not sure what the downloads are meant to provide - it doesn't appear to say.

Sorry to hear about your experience not all that familiar with the site. Just a few questions. What OS are you using in general most do not need any files for wireless adapters so your not really out if using one of them. What issues are you having with the setup, what steps have you taken?

Github isn't affiliated with the site. I do suppose the files could be corrupt but have you attempted to contact the uploader. It is possible they just pointed you to someone elses files and have no control over them at all.

I never trust this sort of thing

You need to go and buy yourself a card and do it yourself.

Seems they are simply selling pre-loaded cards, with the standard raspbian OS on them
So nothing you cannot download and burn yourself. But they do use the raspberry PI logo in their favicon (URL logo) and that might be against trademark rules. unless they have official permission.

It looks to me like they are just selling *links*, not even the actual cards ? RaspBMC for 99p - What's the betting that is going to take you to a download too, probably even Sam's own site.

Doesn't look legit at all to me.

If I understand the problem correctly re:- Wireless and RPi.

It might be breathtaking easy to viz:-

the 9th Feb 2013 edition of Raspbian OS, has on it's Desktop a Wireless Config ikon. It just works !

Without using this feature Wireless is a Mega Pig to get going, I discovered.

It may mean buying a dirt cheap wireless USB dongle but its been very thoroughly covered in other of my posts.

But I may have misread the essence of the problem.

:D

I felt I did download the latest version and did check but was not able to get wireless working, if some could point me towards the Raspbian OS, has on it's Desktop a Wireless Config icon I would be very grateful.

Many thanks

This looks like an interesting rabbit warren of companies. Your download link from raspberrypi-tutorials.co.uk leads to a PayPal page for "Raspberry Shake". raspberryshake.com seems to sell two ebooks — "Raspberry Pi for Schools" and "Raspberry Pi - An Easy Guide to Computing". Both have glowing, five-star reviews from one "Marilyn Richards" — who, oddly enough, has never reviewed anything else for Amazon. Hmm. The first few "Look Inside" pages of "Raspberry Pi for Schools" doesn't look tremendously well written, either. Double Hmm.

The download link for Raspbmc, and all the affiliate links on raspberrypi-tutorials.co.uk, go to "Wizewun Limited", registered at the same address. wizewun.com is an angry-fruit-salad design of a health supplements/fitness sort of thing. The company registrations and WHOIS records all seem to point back to a mix of "The B W Partnership", "Beeson Wright Partnership" or neville-wright.com.

I do have this sinking feeling you may not see your money again. While what they appear to be doing is not illegal (they did provide you with a link for your money; the fact that it's likely a public link doesn't matter), it's pretty much contrary to the spirit of open source.

Can you provide us with the link to the github that they sent you?

2013-02-09-wheezy-raspbian.zip is the current one. Here is the Easy SD Card Setup.

Once you've made the SD card, run the first-time setup, logged in (Username: pi Password: raspberry), type

Code: Select all

startlxde
and the desktop will open. There is the wireless config icon on the desktop. Here's a tutorial on how to use it: Setting up Wifi with Raspbian.

A public, and frankly not very useful link. As I suspected.

Obviously, this is a real scam. It's sad that whatever's popular, scam artists will exploit it.

I've notified the host, but being on a sunday and easter, I think the answer might take a while.

Thanks for the pointer, folks. Lorna's on it; she'll be sending them a nastygram when she's back at work next week.

It's really helpful if you can bring this sort of thing to our attention so we can deal with it. Unfortunately we're seeing a bit of an uptick in scammers because the Pi's been getting so much press lately; we're doing our best to stomp on stuff when we see it. I *hate* having to spend the charity's money on policing trademarks and, sometimes, setting lawyers on the really persistent ones (we're partway through setting up a court case in Turkey over something similar at the moment, which is a very exciting problem I wish we didn't have), but it seems it's part of the package you get when you sell a million of something...

Yay! That's how it's supposed to work. Happy Easter! The chocolate hangover will wear off eventually ...

Liz, do you need a legal fighting fund? I don't have much in the way of UK funds at the moment, but would be very willing to donate.

That's really kind of you, but we're OK for the time being. We're getting some pro bono help from our lawyers, and we do have enough money to deal with this sort of thing; it's just a massive annoyance!

Sounds like a code challenge for some young talented individual to create a crawler that can compare images against the Raspberry Pi logo from a search result for Raspberry Pi. Maybe just start with *.ico and an algorithm that can find similar results.
