Just curious why Farnell selling the board for 24.55 ex vat and £29.46 inc vat. where as RS selling the boards for £21.60 (I except that this may be excluding vat).

Link to farnel site showing the price of a rasberry pi.

1. Because EU law says they can.

2. Because Farnell include shipping and RS don't.

Also, no-one has actually bought a Pi from RS yet. Prices have been all over the place on the various Farnell sites so until RS goes live, there is no guarantee what their price will actually be.

@nmcc.

This was a valid question to ask. Note I did not say that there was anything wrong with it, as I said "I was curious". Answering the post with 1) EU law says it can, is not really answering the specific question. Otherwise Farnel would be breaking the law, which I am sure they are not. And while the price may have come up somewhere else in the forum. I feel that this question probably, would benefit being put in the FAQ questions as I am sure I am not going to be the only one asking this.

There are several posts a day about the pricing.

All the more reason to put it in the FAQ then.

Liz is going to put together a blog post on pricing and where the money goes. Still awaiting more information from the distributors before the post goes live.

I don't know how the Farnell price is constructed, but going on the information posted by RS, the current cost of a Raspberry Pi Model B from them (when they start taking orders) will be:

Raspberry Pi    21.60

Delivery            4.95

Subtotal          26.66

VAT on above   5.31

Total              31.97

So if the Farnell price is all inclusive, then theyrre £2.51 cheaper than RS.

To be honest, we ALL knew that the Foundation price was before VAT and delivery.  You can't get away from 20% VAT and the delivery charge isn't that onerous.  I don't see what the problem is.

Edit:  According to their FAQ, RS also say they'll accept payment by PayPal, if that helps.

Thanks  Jongoleur for the explaination. I only posed the question and did not state there was a problem. Otherwise my post would have been "The robbing *&%^$£  farnell are charging more than RS". Compare that to how I posed the question. If people are so angry about a simple question then it is always a good idea to take a deep breath before posting a reply.

Thats ok.

I hadn't really thought about what the eventual price would come out at beyond a quick mental calculation on "$35 to pounds plus VAT", well even with the exercise of doing the maths conundrum before posting I dragged a calculator out!  So it was a good exercise to see exactly what to expect and it seems like we're slightly ahead of the $1 = £1 calculation for final delivery!

Where delivery is concerned, I fear that many people have dived into the Post Office postage calculator and based their expectations off the postage for a couple of hundred grams.  Against that, a fiver for delivery seems a bit steep, but on general terms its only on the upper side of average for most businesses.

I made the note about PayPal because some posts elsewhere had voiced disappointment that someone wouldn't be accepting PayPal as a mode of payment.
