Re: IRC channel: #raspberrypi on freenode (unofficial)

Thu Aug 11, 2011 4:42 pm

I was just wondering, is there an IRC channel for the Raspberry Pi community? Or if not, would anyone be interested in starting one?

Edit: Thanks to ukscone for setting up the unofficial IRC channel! It is #raspberrypi on freenode (irc.freenode.net).

There is not an IRC channel for the R-pi community yet, I'm not big into IRC, but as they say, "If you build it, they will come"

a simple php/java/flash chat on the website would be enough i think..
but i second the idea to have a chat in general!
i somehow dont like pm´s and spamming the forum threads full of stuff which is often OT or creating a new thread to share/gain information is a bit .. well stupid.
i´d love to have a chat and discuss stuff there.

edit: i have a basic php/javascript chat running on my website which is sql backed and i don´t use it..
i could adjust it a bit so we could use that one for the time beeing...

God - it's years since I used IRC. How many of you would be interested in a chat feature (IRC or something similar) here? If we get enough numbers, I'll set something up over the weekend.

+1 on the IRC channel. Not a fan of browser based chats though.

hmm... my wife might be against anything that would have me spending more time on your site... but I think it might be fun! ;)

It might be handy once the Raspberry Pi is available though. Then you can ask "Why doesn't it work ;-) "

And if it's on freenode then you'll get abused for the way the question was asked and someone will tell you to "man linux" or something.

I'm gone for less than a day and already all these replies? It's good to see that there are others out there that still like the good ol' IRC :D

I like the IRC too, but I worry about losing valuable tips and links that were passed around, unless of course transcripts are archived, but that is probably too much of an ask.

I agree with you a chat would be great. It´s not that important if its an IRC or Java or whatever, if its easy to use, and you can use your normal accounts from the forum.

i've created the channel #raspberrypi on freenode. personally i'd prefer to be using a XMPP MUC but i realize that most people prefer IRC so lets go with that.

of course i'll pass off ops status to "official" raspberry pi people and their nominees but rather than just talk about it i thought we might as well get one started.

I know nothing about running an IRC channel as IRC is evil and Vijay will be first against the wall come the revolution for his deeds wrt IRC :) so if people have suggestions for logging the channel and any other useful bots to put in it.

I generally leave my IRC open all day and it logs the chat, so I can archive the chat if you want me to.

damn.. im to late.. i should have looked into the forum more often..
but im having some problems with the forum atm...
it takes ages to load the forum pages or i have to hit refresh a bazillion times before i even get any data delivered..
happens only here.. am i the only one or does some other users experienced the same?

anyway.. im not so much into irc so i made a chat for the raspi.
plain and staight forward, and i can add a archiv functio so you can always read what have been written..(have to code the archive button first but everything is stored in a sql database already)

Thanks very much! I'm still working on the IRC thing, but the problem is that we need a server to host it (this site is on a shell account, which won't do for IRC), and we're still getting our offices set up so I can't point a dedicated machine at it yet. And, of course, there's a hell of a lot of other RP stuff to do besides, so it may be a couple of weeks before I can get it done.

it does not realy need to be irc.
a normal webchat will be totally enough.
for the webserver you can use a cheap webhost.. no need for a own server....
im paying for my webspace ~12 pound a year and have 2gig space, unlimited traffic, 100 pop mailboxes, 100 mysql databases, subdomains,SSL, FTP, PHP, PHP-Upload, Perl, SSI, Wap, Spam filter ect..
and never had trouble with it...
i also got free support even over the weekend with free skype calls as well.

well dont want to make adverts here but if youre interested just drop me a pm.
p.s.: its a german provider of course ;-)
