Ext. HDD Raid case

Mon Mar 11, 2013 1:56 pm

Hello all,

I've just received my Raspberry Pi, so far just loving it :) .
One of the ideas is to have external storage for my HDD's which would be used as storage for XBMC library or ftp server/NAS...

I'm lookin into external cases, and would like to ask for advice regarding one specific item:

Would this or similar case work with raspbery?
Or maybe the better question is on what should I pay attention when buying a case?

I'd also like to know the answer to this question as I plan to set up a similar system.

I think just about any USB drive enclosure will work.

I am using a cheep BT650 NAS enclosure with a RPi and a 2T SATA drive.
I abandoned the on-board Linux OS and use the box as a USB drive with the RPI configured as a NAS (Samba).

I tapped into the 5V supply (drive power) and use that to power the RPi. Works well.

Another option would be to get an adapter like this and use any old IDE drive or a newer SATA drive.

This also comes with a dual 12V/5V supply which can power the RPi.

I have a similar setup running as a NAS connected to my Fedora 17 box. Drive just sitting on a shelf.
Unless specified otherwise my response is based on the latest and fully updated RPiOS Buster w/ Desktop OS.
