Car 12 volt supply

Thu Feb 28, 2013 8:54 pm

Hi

Can anyone confirm if I can use a 12 volt supply from my car wiring to power the Rasberry Pi.
If so, can you recommend a specific power supply

Thanks in advance
Greg

you would need to bring the 12v down to 5v
2 options one wasts a lot of power as heat and the other no waste at at all
the first option is the LM7805 REGULATOR wats a lot of power and produces a lot of heat would need a heatsink
option 2 ubec (Universal Battery Elimination Circuit) very efficient no waste all

myself I would go for option 2

This is what I am using. I have a dual port cigarette lighter adapter with two USB outputs, one 2.5 amps and one 1 amp. I actually use both outputs because I have a lot of external circuitry to control.
