No sound through HDMI, was working

Mon Feb 18, 2013 9:54 am

I have two rPis, a model B and a model A. The B was connected to downstairs TV and working just fine with sound out through HDMI direct to panasonic viera TV. Recently I was testing what turned out to be a faulty Model A and the new one arrived today.

I first fired up the Model B to check all was working and it seemed fine until I played a music file (just standard mp3) when the onscreen graphics fired up but no sound. Checked all cables and everything is connected just fine. Other inputs into TV (youview box and blu-ray) work fine with sound. Tried other HDMI ports, still no audio from Pi.

Tried new model A with wifi dongle and different SD card than used in model B and same thing happens - I get no audio from the Model A either! This seems really odd - I'm not aware of any way that the sound can be working from one media device (blu ray) on hdmi port 3 and not work from two different PIs on the same port?

Is there any way I could have inadvertently pressed a "mute" key on my android Yatse remote maybe? I'm stumped!

Have you tried turning the TV off -- at the wall, not just to standby or even what looks like lights-off; cut all power to it for a minute.

It's possible that the faulty model A screwed up something in the TV's HDMI interface. A cold boot stands a chance of correcting it.

But that would mean that the BluRay player wouldn't work through it either, wouldn't it? I've literally pulled the hdmi leads out and plugged them in to the same port, so a playing blu ray produces sound, pull out lead, picture and audio from blu-ray player vanishes, plug in RPi lead and plcture appears instantly but no sound at all. No sign of volume being turned down (in fact it's all the way up in xbmc), can't see a mute symbol anywhere, can't see any odd settings, but no audio from either Pi. If I unplug it and plug the BluRay player back in, I instantly get sound again from that!

Had a moment of inspiration... switched the HDMI lead and it all works again! Must have damaged the plug in switching it around and it killed the audio.
