Mod edit by Liz: PLEASE, guys, don't run scripts against our site. We get a lot of traffic and already struggle with bandwidth issues, without the unwelcome addition of bots pinging us every few seconds. If you want an automated way to see whether the main page has been updated, use the RSS feed at www.raspberrypi.org/feed.

@Ayeowch - this is really not a great way to start your posting career here. I hope this was just a well-meant mistake; please, no more of this or I'll have to ban you.

I have a script that monitors changes to the shop and opens the page in my browser if anything is detected

I''ve set it to run every 5 minutes, I don't want to DDoS the server

The live widget polls the main page every 5 seconds for new posts and visitors viewing the widget will see results from the poll request made by the server. Enjoy!

Whilst I can see the good intent, this sort of thing makes the situation worse, particularly if it encourages others (like poster #2) to setup their own variation.

We WILL get an email giving ADVANCE notice of when the shop will be open for orders – thus far Liz & the rest of the crew have shown excellent judgement on everything else so there is no reason to think we won't get at least 24 hours notice, plenty of time for us to see the email and prepare accordingly.

I've written the script a couple of months ago. I didn't make it public because I never wanted to encourage others.

I use a 5 minutes timer, but others could easily set it to a few seconds making things worse.
I posted mostly to tell that a 5 seconds delay could cause problems.

This is pointless and, frankly, unhelpful. IT WON'T WORK.

The first notification of 'Pi availability won't be on the shop or anywhere else on this or any other website - it will be in an email sent to all those on the mailing list. THEY WILL HEAR FIRST. Doing things like this merely increases the server load.

I'm closing this thread on the grounds that similar messages have been duplicated several times already.

This thread remains closed, but we'd be grateful if you could all read and inwardly digest the edit I've made to the OP. PLEASE don't run scripts against the site. We understand what might drive you to do this, but it's really, really not helpful at a time when we're getting a lot of traffic and working hard to keep everything working smoothly.

You will all get plenty of notice about when sales start. Scripts just make my day more difficult and won't help you get to the head of the queue.
