How well do you think the R-Pi woud handle a nginx web server (Just for a small personal site) with Gnome, openSSH and xRDP (or VNC server), turned on 24/7 with a Samsung microUSB cable powered by a USB iPod charger.

I am planning on buying Model B when it is released!

Thanks in advance.

The website doesn't mention ARM:

http://nginx.org/en/

but if it works, it sounds like it's a contender:

Will have to give it a test when I get a R-Pi to try it on.  :)

It'd do a great job.  Maybe use a lighter desktop, but for web serving from home it would be perfect.

What desktop environment would you recommend, LXDE maybe.

Oh and I forgot to mention I am going to be running it with Fedora.

Also would 10mbit Download and 1mbit upload with unlimeted bandwith be good enough for a small, very low traffic site?

Your download rate is pretty much irrelevant.  Upload rate is what is usually important.  I run ADSL which gives me 448 Kbps upstream, and a run a bug tracking system on that which is fine (although not terribly busy).

nginx is pretty portable and does build on arm (and other architectures) as well.

LXDE is the recommended DE - although you can go lighter if you know what you are doing.

Could you please link me to how I can build nginx on it, also will the Fedora SD card image come with LXDE, if not please tell me howto get it.

Also, what Package manager will Fedora come with? (I have only really used CentOS and Ubuntu in the Past!) Finally, as well as using as a Web Server, etc, would it run my AAC music library smoothly? (Will convert to MP3 if needed). Oh and one last thing, would you recommend running the OS from my Class 2 8gb SD card or my Class 4 4gb SD card (Or buy another?).

DJ, if you have the time and patience - wait on the card purchase. Shortly after release, the amount of confirmed knowledge we can update the Wiki with will increase a thousand fold. There are so many unknowns, it is hard to give good advice. but with 10k units being sold, I would hope we will have many hundreds of cards being tested, within a week of the RPi being sent out.

Don't bother with a GUI for a server, it'll never get used and sucks up loads of memory. If you want a GUI interface for managing it, use one of the many web control panels instead.

Ok but I really want to know before it is released, so I can prepare everything beforehand

I will use a web interface for managing nginx but need a GUI for remote VNC/xRDP logon. Also I will be using a GUI for Music/Internet Radio.

I will be using the Fedora image, so will it be the same but just with yum instead of apt-get. Also, I hope my kitty doesn't die

Also, I know it is a bit off-topic, but I think the database server is on the way out, as it has cut out at least 5 times in the last 2 minutes!

I know - it's a nightmare. We are getting absolutely obscene amounts of traffic this week, and there's not a huge amount we can do about it; we already have cacheing etc. up to the eyeballs. As usual, I recommend leaving it a while and trying again.

Ok, will the Fedora image be out before the Pi?

Also, do you have any ideas when they will be back from China and on sale?

1) Yes.

2) Yes. You'll have to watch this space for an announcement. There are still ducks to corral into a row here at the Foundation.

Don't know if anyone has mentioned it but...

Best practice would be to use an simple old fashioned HTML "welcome" page, especially when you put the R-Pi's up for sale!

Having a static HTML takes a load off of the database, so people coming here to buy the device can get to the correct .com page without touching the database.

Having been to a few sites that have been "SlashDotted" in the past they tend to end up with either a 404 error page or a simple 3 or 4 line static page explaining what's going on and to direct people to the required parts of the site.

Yes, or maybe a dedicated server (If your not already using one) from somewhere such as Kimsufi or OVH (Because of the good prices)?
