Re: News articles and blog posts about Raspberry Pi

Well, I *am* planning to advertise it on the village website to all comers; I just assume that only kids will take me up on it, because it's an hour's work here and there rather than a steady block of time. Plus, kids don't get benefits which are negated by a few evenings' envelope stuffing, so they're much more likely to take us up on the offer of a dribble of minimum wage than the local adults. I am sure the situation would be quite different in countries without a functioning welfare system, but fear that's a discussion for not just another thread, but an entirely different website.

(Plus, they have to be literate. They need to be able to read the stickers on the envelopes so they know which ones need customs forms.)

Go get 'em earning, to pay for a discounted Raspberry Pi ( Employee benefit ).

Only one needs to be able to read! Remember specialization and assembly line workers.

It's only just been put up, so I've not listened to it, but apparently Eben's on this week's BBC Radio 5 Live Outriders podcast. I understand that this may be broadcast later on too - but you can listen to it here first.

ETA: Actually, now I've listened to the whole thing, and there's not a sausage on there - suspect this is the wrong episode. I've removed the link; ignore this for now and I'll try to track down the right one!

Apparently a piece about the Raspberry Pi aired at ~3am this morning on Radio 5 Up All Night. Anyone have a link?

Thanks for the link to the podcast!

It was interesting reading the "Readers Digest" article. I don't think I've ever seen the phrase "Heath Robinson" in a genuine article before (a particular favourite phrase in my family when growing up), but then that's RD for you...

The PR does seem to be going very well, and it is great that it is quite a broad range of people it is getting to. I can imagine a lot of RD readers who aren't technical could open up a new world by using a pre-loaded R-Pi to get online for the first time. I introduced my father-in-law to a touchpad, and he never wanted anything to do with computers before, now looks up everything all the time.

From your twitter post about the stickers...
Raspberry_Pi: @MatStace Sorry it's been so long! We have learned an important lesson about getting x10 more stock in than we think we need.
If only this could be applied to the R-pi "foundry" (I understand why of course) - by the way it sounds like you are forging them in the fires of Mordor.

Good luck with getting the stickers out, might be a warning that it's not just the production that will need ramping up. What you need is a smalll low cost computer with some hardware I/O, which you could program to stuff envelops for you... BTW Did the printers deliver the new lot yesterday, no update on the shop yet.

Perhaps it is also worth asking the 1st batch R-Pi customers to provide feedback as soon as they get them and also later when they've tried them out with some detailed feedback (issues with displays, power supplies etc etc), it might speed up catching any issues if there are any or at least providing confidence on pushing the button(s) on the 2nd batch and ramp up.

The Wall St Journal. Rob did the interview for this, and mailed me to say "Shame he didn't actually have one in his hand and got the size wrong. )*: A few other little niggles/inaccuracies but I get the feeling they
always approximate what you say."

Here's the BBC Radio 5 Live podcast. I haven't listened to it yet…

(ETA I have now! It's mostly a phone interview with Eben, and it's one of the better ones he's done - our bit starts at 9 mins)

In our actual School newspaper is a Article dedicated to the Raspberry Pi... well i just write a few lines of the Article and i've done partly the layout of it. The relevance of Articles from School newspaper is pretty low but hopefully i'll post in the right topic ;) The Article is in German but i can translate it to a language wich is more comfortable to read if anyone want;) http://sprachrohr.nige.de/Spra.....ent/16.pdf

A translation would be good if you are able to without too much hassle (sorry I am ashamed of my lack of language skills).

If there is an electronic version, google translate would be enough for me.

Raspberry Pi has been Slashdotted at least 11 times. Perhaps they should create a specific section for its stories, like what happens with "linux", "cloud" and "science" :)

Just a quick head-up: The Raspberry Pi got a brief mention in a discussion on IT education in schools on the Today programme on BBC Radio 4 this morning, just before the 7AM news.

Today: Monday 28th November - 0653
Some of the biggest firms in hi-tech, including Google and Microsoft, are calling for major changes in the education system to give Britain the computing skills it needs to compete. Technology correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones and Alex Hope, co-author of the Livingstone Hope Review which looked into the skills needed for school leavers to fully engage in the video games and visual effects industries, outline the concerns.

Hells yeah. It just might be considered "cool" to climb out of a 30 year rut! It just might be considered "cool" to start fresh teaching programming and hacking to the new generation for the new generation of untethered devices... and I really think it's "cool" that core of the Acorn RISC Machine I remember reading about in Information Week way back when in the '80's survived a quarter of a century to become the father of a new generation of portable devices. 8-)
