I know the Model A is ready to go and the hold up is due to the shortage of BCM2835 chips (You can't make model As without losing the same number of model Bs). But is there light at the end of the tunnel yet ?

@liz stated it (BCM2835) in a post where she explained why the A model was being delayed. I.E. the backlog caused by the introduction of the 512MB version!

The backlog has eased up. I just hope we do not have to wait out the 20 week (I think that is what @jamesh stated it was) lead time on the processors.

@liz stated something like the first quarter 2013. So keep your fingers crossed!

Although you could just write code on the Model B..

We use a 'interrupt' based approach to news, rather than 'polling', which is someone inefficient.

Its about hardware, power consumption, and my favourite gripe, the USB. Its whether it will work as expected in a commercial project I have in mind. I'm well aware the coding isn't going to be any different, particularly as my present test bed is an old series 1 board with 256Mb.

Yeah. Although for most of us a model B with a bit hacked out will extend the battery life, there's always the possibility that some unforeseen differences will appear in the behaviour of the production boards.

But, we'll get it when we get it. I guess the foundation simply don't want to commit to a date until they know it's on. Look how many people found something to complain about on the first mass launch - some of it got pretty nasty and it was totally unjustified.

USB is same on the Model A - it's just the hub is not in the picture. The Synopsys driver is on the SoC after all...

Way back in the elephant thread, I read that the model A didn't suffer many of the USB problems that the B has. Supposedly its adding a hub that is a problem. I could scrape by with just one USB for what I want to do when the dedicated camera module comes along. (I know that's still in development so I won't irritate you by asking about that).

There will be differences I believe, but some issues will still be there.
