Hi,

I use my pi trough Putty, but is it possible to run a IRC programm trough putty? Not a server - but a normal client.

There are 2 console based IRC clients that I'm aware of there maybe more but irc-ii and bitchx should suffice.
I'm not sure if there are precompiled binaries for the Pi however you can always download the sources and compile yourself.

apt-get install screen irssi

run 'screen -S IRC irssi'

....connect to irc network, etc...

CTRL+A, D to detach

Close SSH Window (or PuTTY)....

When you want to get back to your IRC client, just ssh into the Pi and do 'screen -r IRC' and there's your IRC client.

irssi is the best of the bunch. flexible, fast and really nice to play with. Make sure you read the manual though.

I have been using ircii for many years now, but irssi is supposed to be better.

Hi guys,

have finally managed to setup my Raspberry Pi with IRSSI and an external HDD.

Problem is, as soon as the DCC starts downloading, the current screen freezes and I have to wait until the download is finished to be able to do something again.

My setup is as follows:

Raspberry Pi B+ connected to RJ45 directly to Router.
2TB Samsung HDD to USB Hub D-LINK DUB-H4, mounted to ~/mnt/
USB Hub connected to Raspberry Pi.

Funny thing is, when I CTRL A-D the screen I can work as nothing is happening the terminal screen. I would have thought, that the entire Raspberry Pi is totally worked up.

I checked the speed on my Windows 7 Laptop - I only have a speed of about 200kB/s, while my usual average is about 2.7MB/s.

Anyone else having this issue? And what can I do about it?

Thanks for your help already.

Cheers

OrdH

Hi there,

nobody knows anything about this issue? I thought there are actually a lot of people out there using IRSSI with Raspberry Pi in connection with an external HDD, do they all have the same issue or just me?

Still thankful for help.

I seriously doubt that...

The fact that you posted in a topic that has deceased a long time ago doesn't help either.
It's also unrelated to the original question, which was about using a console based IRC client using Putty / SSH.
AFAICS your problem is about HDD write speed... or is it download speed?

Funny thing is, when I CTRL A-D the screen I can work as nothing is happening the terminal screen. I would have thought, that the entire Raspberry Pi is totally worked up.
Don't really understand what you're saying here.
I checked the speed on my Windows 7 Laptop - I only have a speed of about 200kB/s, while my usual average is about 2.7MB/s.
So the speed on Win is 200KBit?

Assuming the problem is HDD write speed: what file system is on the HD? NTFS is notoriously slow.

Hi,

thanks for the reply anyway. You want me to open up a new thread before we continue?
