Almost any linux system can be set up to behave like Raspbian.

If you want to have your system boot into a normal shell and not a graphical login-screen you just disable the service that starts this login screen.

This service have different names based on which desktop system you have installed. The original name is "xdm" but if you have Gnome or KDE as deskop system its usually "gdm" and "kdm".

On newest Ubuntu I think its called the "Unity Greeter" or something.

Yes, its possible. Make sure that your hardware is supported... or "just try". I had a google at "debian netbook" as the Pi runs Debian. See http://www.waltzballs.org/other/linux/eee.html
Pi1 (Nov 2012 loft)= 1KW immersion controller for Solar panel
Pi2 (Jan 2013 living room)=Play thing
Pi3 (Feb 2013 mobile)= Play thing with Tandy Ladder board,breakout board,Nokia display

If you are using Raspbian on you Raspberry Pi, this has the LXDE desktop.

The nearest equivalent suitable for your Netbook is Lubuntu which also has the LXDE desktop,

The range of software packages available is very similar for both, I actually run both the above Distro's because of their similarities.
