Re: Anyone (in the US) looking for a cheap but reliable SD card.

Not so sound spammy, but I have found a cheap one with excellent reviews. After someone else can verify it is of decent quality (by examining description and ratings) I plan to buy one. I hope others appreciate my hint.

Well. It's going to cost you $8 inc p&p for a 2Gb SD card no-one has ever heard of, from a company I have never heard of.

For $8.19 p&p free, you can get an 8Gb Sandisk SDHC card from Amazon.

Thanks for an even better deal. Anyway, even cheaper:

Cheap isn't always good.

Check the speed rating for the options you are looking at (class 2 cards are slower than class 4 etc, but class 10 cards are reportedly not generally 'Pi-compatible, so perhaps best avoided for now)

These Sandisk cards are only Class 2. The Sandisk I tracked down, above, is Class 4

There seems to be a paradox about class, the class refers to write speeds and not as much to read.

1. If you choose a class 10 it may not function in the PI as it seems to be a limitation at the kernel rather than hardware issue.

2. Would a class 10 make any difference on a 700 Mhz device.

3. Would the difference be enough to justify the price difference.

I have a class 10 8Gb card and the difference in my camera is negligible at best as the speed problem is in the camera not the storage device.

Class 4 cards are on sale all the time for about $1 to $1.5 US per Gb (in my area)vs class 10 cards are $3 to $4 per Gb.

I stocked up on cards during black Friday at the local wally world and paid 4.88 for 4Gb and 8.88 for 8Gb class 4 cards and figured this is good enough as had to pay no shipping.

IMHO it seems to be ludicrous to pay more for the card than the device itself especially till I have one in hand which may be still months from now.

See good deals on eBay all the time but worry about if they are what they say as knockoffs of almost every product you can think of are generally not worth what you paid for them.

I have used Sandisk cards for many years and they have stood the test of time so I continue to purchase them.(I have cards with no class rating on them that I still use)

Was kind of curious why some of the used cards are so much more expensive than the new cards LOL.
If you are more worried about ,spelling, punctuation or grammar you have probably already missed the point so please just move on.

Class 10 is a bit of a shot in the dark in two ways. Firstly, It could be incompatible with the Pi. Secondly, you may take a hit on random speed because of class 10 architecture vs class 6 or lower.

I just bought a 16gb class 6 off newegg for $13. 8gb are on sale for $8 all the time.

Your advice seems ill-researched.

I just picked up two house-brand 8GB Class 10 cards from Microcenter last week for $9.99 each. They have another model that has no speed rating that is $6.99.  Maybe you can get slightly better prices online but I'm happy with this price for the walk-in convenience.  I did some very basic speed tests using an old EeePC 701 and got nearly 15MB/sec which is faster than the rating so I'm happy with them.  It inspired me to do more testing on every random flash device I had floating around which I posted here:

Flash Memory Speed Tests

I don't know how the EeePC will compare to the RPi.  I think I might pick up one of the $6.99 models too, just for comparison.
