Desktop Shortcut to Folder?

Tue Nov 03, 2020 11:51 am

Hi everyone,

It's been a while and I hope everyone is well and safe in this crazy world we have here.

Quick Question:
What are the exact steps to create a Desktop Shortcut to a Folder???

My Pi 4 is a little web server I've created.

I simply want a shortcut to the site files on my desktop that points and opens the folder in /var/www/html. That's it.

I've looked at pretty much every thing.
1 - Can't seem to get any example to actually work.
2 - Crazy but... there seems to be no clear and concise example on this. At least not to me. (newb with a little bit of legs grown here, apologies up front)

Anyway, clear direction on this is really appreciated and thank you for your time!!

Drag the directory from File Manager onto the desktop and it will create a shortcut.

Or from the command line:

Code: Select all

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ ln -s /path/to/your/directory ~/Desktop
Change "/path/to/your/directory" to be the directory you want to make a link to.
Unreadable squiggle

Doesn't work for me.
Unless specified otherwise my response is based on the latest and fully updated RPiOS Buster w/ Desktop OS.

Looks like you need permissions on the directory? I successfully did it with Mypython directory from the right hand pane of the filemanager. Other random directories didn't work from outside my home directory.

Hmmm.....when I drag that html folder to my desktop it actually moves the whole folder... so that doesn't seem to work for me.

Hey the command worked! Wow thanks y'all! This is a huge help. Surprised its not more straight forward. Should be in the right click list of options on a folder. Any thanks again! This problem is solved!

I found that holding the [Ctrl] key while left dragging from the right pane works.
