Encrypted Thumb Drives

I was reading the recently locked thread
viewtopic.php?f=63&t=280540
and started thinking easily encrypted USB thumb drives would be a good idea, especially for computer novices who would otherwise lose sensitive personal information when the drive detaches from their keychain and lands somewhere unknown on the sidewalk near where they shelter at home.
My tests indicate the performance is so bad on most thumb drives that, except for the Zero, people would not notice the performance loss from encryption.
It seems the idea of the locked thread was that it should be possible to insert a LUKS encrypted drive into the Pi and have the desktop ask for the password through a popup window. The person making the original post claimed such things worked a little bit on other Linux distributions, but something specific to the Raspberry Pi desktop made use of encrypted thumb drives more difficult.
I suspect a little scripting with Tcl/Tk would be sufficient for most dinosaurs, but was wondering, has anyone fixed this themselves and how?
Recommendations are appreciated.
