What's your screen resolution? (poll)

Tue Jun 30, 2020 2:14 am

In the past I've done some interesting surveys on this forum, like this one asking what your internet speed was.
Here's another good question: What's your screen resolution?

I know what you nitpickers will say: "Which screen?" To clarify, answer for the screen which you use most often. TL;DR I don't care about your old CRT in the closet.
  • If you use a PC more than you use your RPi, answer with the resolution of your PC.
  • Smartphones don't count.
  • I just know someone's going to ask if their calculator is eligible... Really? You use your calculator more often than you use your Pi?
Credit where it's due: Inspiration from Ejolson's post mentioning he had to adjust fonts to make them readable on his 4K monitor.
I've developed the most intuitive RaspiOS img editor on the planet.
With a GUI similar to Gparted, managing imgs and sd cards is a breeze!
Boot it in a VM, Flash from the Internet at top speed, Mount (to drop in files), Shrink/Expand, Repair, and more.

Even just reducing it to Pis, I still have to ask, which one? Not only do I have Pis using five different screen resolutions, but four of those aren't on your list.

800x600 VGA 4:3 15", which I actually do use about 80% of the time, wasn't on the list so I went for 1080p HDMI which is what all my Pi monitors/TV's are.

I had anticipated that question, and so answered it in the original post:

And if you use two Pies exactly as often, then go flip a coin or something...

With only 10 poll options, it's impossible to list every resolution out there. Just do your best to estimate. (see the poll question, I said "estimates are fine")
Example: If your screen is 1366x768, then round it to the nearest poll option, which in this case is 720p.

my screens are 1920x1080, but i'm running them at 1600x900, so wasn't sure if i should go for 720 or 1080, chose 1080 since that is native.

I'd go with 1080. (especially since 900 is closer to 1080, not 720)

Still doesn't help much. The Pi that has the most time displaying on a screen is my "alarm clock". It has an active display 24/7, but that doesn't mean anyone spends a lot of time "using" it. The second most likely to have a Pi displaying content is the one set up for my grandson. That one is a 19" 1280x1024, but I'm not the one generally "using" it. A distant third would be the 27" 1920x1080 connected to my KVM switch. While that one can be accessed by 4 Pis at any given time, a lot of my work with those Pis is done through PuTTY, not a direct monitor connection.

And at that, I forgot one. The resolutions of displays I use with Pis are: 1920x1200, 1920x1080, 1600x1200, 1280x1024, 800x480 (RPF display), and 480x320 (Neosec TinyLCD35). Which one I am using depends on a lot of factors.

So...on the whole, for my personal time spent looking at a display connected to a Pi, the majority is probably "none".

Most of your screens listed would round up to 1080. :?
It's really your choice.

Presumably you are talking of screens attache do Pi's:

Less than 240p. Usually somewhere between 1 and 5 pixels depending on model. Could be 64 by 64 when I add my Sense Hat.

1440 X 900 (WXGA+), in the middle of 720p and 1080p, I'd imagine a fair proportion of users have monitors not TVs?

Perhaps, but that rounding would be deceptive. When one says "1080p" one usually means a wide aspect ratio, as in 16:9. The 1920x1200 and 1920x1080 are that. The 1600x1200 and 1280x1024 are most definitely not. They are 4:3 and 5:4 respectively. The 480x320, which is quite common in small (2" to 3.5") screens, is 3:2, which really isn't a wide aspect, either.

I've got an HP 1440x900 19" monitor that I got as an inexpensive backup (it was on sale). It's still in the original--sealed--box. (The 1600x1200 monitor I have is actually a 20" diagonal.)

Both the screens on my main laptop are 1080p. Those are the ones I use most often.

I'll let you click the buttons.
1050 are my majority probably, much nicer than 1080p
But the nicest* of them all is the next one up from 1050, but I can never remember the resolution.

I can tell you 1050 is not the same as 1080, so I'm not clicking a button and then my mane resolution has three screens, so hey ho.

Anyway, my laptop 1080 15" screen is nothing like my 21" screens or the 37" screen.
Resolution says didly squat about you preferred screen.
*because that resolution works really nice at the slightly larger size of that monitor.

Oh how we can make a simple poll so complicated ;-)

With the Pi, if it was just about the PI. IT would be ZeroK resolution, (aka headless) or 1080. 1080 purely because it's always been the easiest resolution to use through the years, bits are not missed of the bottom as they sometimes have during setup and I don't use small screens normally.

EDIT
to clarify they're 16:10 1050, though I really did like my 1400x1050 resolution on my old Dell Inspiron 4100, back with the great PIIIm 1GHz laptop, ~20 years back now, and they still try and sell 720p screens in laptops as HD screens.

I run at 2560x1440 on a Lenovo l24Q-10. Quad HD is marketed as 4K but isn't quite. Nevertheless I've gone with the marketeers. Shoot me!

That's 2k as it's nearer to the 2000 horizontal pixels that 2k means.
you'd need 4000 (3840 for TV 4K "UHD")

the 1920x1200 is also a 2K screen.

So a naff way to define things.

How have you found the Lenovo screen, what is the colour like on it.
I have a few dull screens that need replacing.

There is absolutely no point in "rounding to nearest resolution". It completely messes up any sort of relevance in the poll whatsoever.

Hence closing, as entirely unhelpful.
