Minimalist Distro w/o Bloatware/Extra Programs

Mon Jun 01, 2020 5:54 pm

I think Rasbian is cool for including a lot of programs that essentially make the pi like a desktop computer, but I have my own desktop to do those things lol and I primarily use the pi for programming and coding. Just wanted to see if there was a distro that is just a linux os w/ a gui desktop and maybe like one program being a web browser but besides a web browser, the distro itself would have little to no extra stuff.

Yes. Start with Raspberry Pi OS Lite. It has nothing graphical at all.

I have never tried it but I guess if you then install a browser package on to it will pull in the whole X Windows system and some kind of window manager in which the browser can run.

Which will also be the case for any other Linux distro.

Well Lite + xserver + a window manager. But absolutely you can easily build a slimmed down version.

The key is to ensure you use the right switches (--no-install-recommends) for your apt commands, when you are installing, to avoid bringing in the kitchen sink. For example to install xserver you would use the command:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends xserver-xorg

This is a decent guide to get the idea:

Just checked out that post and looked up some more on Raspberry Pi OS Lite, it is literally exactly what I needed and I'm surprised I did not notice it before. Thank you guys.

you can do -> sudo apt install lightdm budgie-desktop
that is a bare bone install, you'll need to pick what ever apps you want.
