HDMI to VGA adapter

A friend found this cute converter HDMI to VGA - http://www.meritline.com/hdmi-.....77485.aspx

This is not cheap but less expensive than a HD screen.

... and will look $20 uglier. Better try this + an HDMI to miniHDMI adapter.

I tend to be distrustful of such (relatively) inexpensive hdmi to VGA adapters.  My suspicion is that the ASUS laptop this works with sends an analog signal out along with the digital.  It then does a passive conversion to VGA and most the cost comes from it being a special pin out.  This, of course, is just my cynical view and maybe it is an active convertor.  I'd have to see some strong confirmation on the subject before paying 30  bucks for it

Me thinks these converters are way overpriced. Nowadays, they can make a complete linux box for just $25 , so why should such stupid crap cost a fortune? It's not exactly rocket science to glue a TFP9431 on a little PCB. This is what a digital/serial to vga converter should cost... Anyway, dunno if you consider it "strong" but here is some kind of confirmation. And a update for the "even better" link:

The unit that Scarfy found is very interesting. It uses a 5v power supply, so (in theory) it could share a power supply with the RPi, if you are willing to chop and join some power cables.

While it is likely that the supplied adaptor will have a higher current output capability than the converter requires, it may not be enough to handle the extra demand from the RP.  Not saying it won't, but generally higher power means a more expensive unit and there isn't any incentive for the manufacturer to supply a more expensive PSU than necessary.

Thanks for the link Scarfy. Looks a promising candidate to avoid paying $200 for an HDMI TV or binning my existing LCD and getting one with DVI input and using a HDMI/DVI dongle.

Doesn't seem to offer any more than the one that SE43 linked to in post #2.  £26 with free shipping from China.  Only 2 left!

Or have a look at item #280621510093 on ebay.co.uk and wonder why 258 people have each forked out £935 for one.  (And another £3 delivery – the cheek!)

Perhaps, because when you look at the list of sales they were at £35, which is semi-reasonable.

Yes it does! The konigs claim to support HDCP 1.2 (which of course makes a lot of sense, especially on the VGA output ) and to use 10 bit DACs – on a CRT you might see the difference. But since LCD monitors usually have 8 bit ADCs inside i guess it doesn't matter much… And no worry at all, them chinamen have enaugh of this stuff:

I gather that when a supplier temporarily runs out of stock but intends to keep selling the item, it is often easier to increase the price to a ridiculously high amount, rather than pull the advert and have to pay to insert it again.

Not sure why you would want to attach a Sky box to an old PC monitor. My recollection is that the recent boxes have HDMI, SCART and the old RF so there would be no need for a converter for even the oldest TVs.

Says it works up to UXGA - which is 1600 by 1200.  SkyBox is 1920 by 1080?  I don't have a SkyBox with HDMI so don't know.

Well spotted I should have looked closer. 1920x1080 is only 8% more pixels than 1600x1200 but it could be the straw that broke the camels back!

but it says it supports HDCP up to 1.2 at least..

the only thing i know about sky's hdmi is that it doesn't provide much power over HDMI.. at home I use an HDMI autoswitcher which will use power from HDMI to switch. I have had to add a power adapter to it it as the sky+ box doesn't give it enough juice.. whereas the xbox360, blu-ray player, both my laptops and desktop are fine with it
