Pin Layout

Wed Apr 22, 2020 8:44 am

(I'm sorry if this has been asked before, I couldn't find it.)
Is there any particular reason as to why the Pins of the Raspberry Pi are arranged in the seemingly chaotic way they are? (With the Ground pins all over the place and the disorderly numbering of the GPIO pins.)

Guessing, but probably due to PCB layout reasons in the very first version of the Raspberry Pi. And since then we have had to follow the same pattern.

They also tried to make it so that there was a ground in a sensible place for small batches of GPIOs, so things like these simple LED traffic lights only need 4 GPIOs.

"''..... only need 4 GPIOs." should be "... only need a 4 pin connector".
