Very much looking forward to buying a Pi, but have a couple of questions.

Are hdmi to vga converters readily available? As I already have an old vga monitor I wish to use.

And will cases for Pi be made to allow units to be covered?

These questions have already been answered in FAQ. I'll answer them again though.

1. No. The Pi only outputs (in addition to Composite) digital HDMI, so you'll have to go from HDMI to DVI-D to VGA which to be honest isn't worth it.

2. Eventually, cases will be available from both the third party and the Pi website, but not until the product is out and all the enthusiasts get to play around first.
{sig} Setup: Original version Raspberry Pi (B, rev1, 256MB), Dell 2001FP monitor (1600x1200), 8GB Class 4 SD Card with Raspbian and XBMC, DD-WRT wireless bridge

It is possible to buy a proper HDMI to VGA converter but the price is such that it is close the the price of a cheap HDMI monitor. The HDMI/VGA cables that are on sale for a couple of squid won't do the job as they can't convert the signal from digital to analogue.
