Raspberry Pi 4 B won't boot from SD card

Tue Apr 14, 2020 6:52 pm

Hi, I have the RPI4 v1.2 RAM 4G and it does not start. I am using a good charger (4A) but it is not the original of the Raspberry. The issue with USB Type-C cables is supposed to be fixed in version 1.2. My question is: has anyone managed to run the RPI4 with non-original chargers?.
Thank you

Is the first thing I did.
I do not have the official power source. but I am using a good power supply of more than 3A. My question is if anyone has had problems with the power supply in v1.2.
I have seen the schematic and nothing has changed regarding the USB Type-C connector

Thank you

It was USB Power Delivery which was the issue, not USB Cables par-se...

the question is that I have reviewed the schematic and the board with a magnifying glass and I don't see any hardware modification in version v1.2 with respect to v1.1

Yes. Works fine here with a 2.4A Anker charger. I don't have any USB peripherals attached so the reduced current capacity is no problem.

The USB-C CC problem is generally not an issue for most people. You only see a problem if you have expensive high current USB-C PD chargers e.g. laptop chargers or expensive e-marked USB-C cables.

That is the v1.1 schematic. AFAIK there hasn't been an updated version for v1.2.

It isn't immediately visible unless you look very closely. The one of the traces around the USB-C connector was changed but general component placement is still the same. The easiest change to spot is the moved component near the micro SD socket but that is unrelated to the USB-C CC fix.

If you have a 1.2 board you won't have any problems with the power supply, whatever type it is. Your problem is elsewhere.

If you have a 1.1 board, you may have problems with very specific power supplies that use PD negotiation. Mosty power supplies will however work fine.

Re-install Raspbian Buster on the micro-SD card. If still failing install on another micro-SD card.

That's not it, I've already tried 5 different cards and I don't even remember how many times I've installed Raspbian
Thank you anyway

Just one more question, if the board does not have any additional hardward components, what modification have you made to make it work with any power supply?

that looks like a bad sd card to me, cause the root is read only.
how are you creating your sd cards?

I format the cards with SD Card Formatter v 5.01 and load the image with Win32DiskImager and I have also tested balenaEtcher both applications with the latest update.
I do not think it is from SD cards or applications, I have tried them and they work well with RPI3

Re: Raspberry Pi 4 B won't boot from SD card

I have installed LibreELEC for RPI4 and the same thing happens to me as when I install Raspbian Buster if I leave the default options in config.txt the system does not start if I lower the CPU frequency in the configuration file:
arm_freq = 700

The operating system starts although it is not stable at all
Any possible solution?

Isn't the board just showing signs of overheating damage?

I once had a RPi3 with the case advertized by the shop. However that case appeared not to be designed for long lasting compilation runs, and the Pi3 didn't throttle down enough because the built in thermostat didn't measure the temperature correctly.

When I got my replacement RPi3 I immediately bought a fan case with it. Nowadays there are passively cooled metal cases.

The RPi4 is known for it's temperature issues even more.

All Raspberry Pi have Thermal Management and regards the 4B it runs a lot cooler than it did on release due to various updates. This Blog was 6 months after release and more updates since:
