New 2711 datasheet available

Mon Apr 06, 2020 8:35 am

The full 2711 datasheet has just been uploaded to github and should go live on the main docs pages in a couple of hours.

EDIT : Now live

https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentati ... 11_1p0.pdf

Enjoy this extensive read during the current crisis! It's a major update to the original 2835 datasheet, with a lot more information. If you find any problems, please comment on this thread.

Apologies. I do have a general announcement thread, but that is locked to comments, hence this extra thread where people can comment.

Thanks.

It may just be my monitor or eyes but some of the background colours in the Alt Function tables on pages 98 to 101 makes the text very hard to read, esp dark olive, dark red and navy blue.

You might like to try:

Code: Select all

$ wget https://github.com/raspberrypi/documentation/blob/master/hardware/raspberrypi/bcm2711/rpi_DATA_2711_1p0.pdf
Then open it with the PDF reader of your choice.

It's now properly on the docs page, which is a better viewing experience than Github, which seems to be a bit iffy. Will change link in OP.

What do you mean? Trying to view it on github failed, or downloading the PDF and then trying to view it on the Pi4 failed?

Going to the (previously) linked Github-page with my Pi4 4GB was fine. I clicked the link to get the .pdf, once the download was complete Chromium and my mouse froze for a while. Once the Pi was unfrozen (I jut left it for a while, being busy with work), opening the pdf worked perfectly fine for me.

Everything is up and running just fine now, but something's odd. It made my dev. work PC pause for a bit too. I'll retry it.

It seems like it is the git pdf viewer that makes my Chromium misbehave.

This time it shut down Chromium after a while. (The work win 10 PC works fine with it now though)

TBH, I was having trouble viewing it in github on an 16GB I7 laptop running WIn10. So not surprising the Pi4 was struggling. Should be OK if you view it via the docs repo.

The document has no chapter for the BSC/SPI slave mode, The slave mode does actually still work pretty much the same as on earlier models (the GPIO have changed).

I2C clock stretching fixed! Also 16bit (65k) byte limit for I2C DLEN!
Now if I could get my favorite python drivers to use the new features (smbus).

pci/genet/pll/hdmi/vec all appear to be missing

and linux already has drivers for all 5 of those components (and several more), so they dont fall under "There are a number of peripherals which are intended to be controlled by the GPU. These are omitted from this datasheet. Accessing these peripherals from the ARM is not recommended."

Yes, there are some missing blocks. Some are missing because few if any people use them, some are missing because we don't have the in house knowledge to actually document them (Some of the ones with Linux drivers are a case in point - those drivers were not written by us), some are missing because we haven't had time to document them. It's taken a LONG time just to get this document in a publishable state!

I don't believe we have any schedules as to when anything missing will be added, so this is it for the moment.

I'd suggest that if there is a Linux driver available for a particular undocumented block, then that would be a good starting point to learn about the block itself.

There are also a number of blocks that are Broadcom IP that they use in other products, and as such they are more protective of the IP. That is certainly the case for things like the HDMI core.

one thing i would like to see, is baremetal video output, either hdmi, dpi, dsi, or vec(ntsc/pal), with minimal/no aid from the firmware

there are linux drivers for most of that, but without docs, it can be difficult to know what your doing wrong when it does fail to work

I think you are out of luck. This stuff WE have difficulty making work properly - got a couple of support requests open with Brcm for help. The KMS driver does most of this, but still isn't all there for the Pi4. And wasn't written by us....

Just trying to get some information on the current status of KMS and what is being done at the moment. Should work ok the 3's, but still under development.
