StartX blank screen problem (solved)

Wed Dec 26, 2012 11:42 am

Hello guys, I finally got my Raspberry Pi yesterday! But STILL haven't managed to get it to work properly!

I was up till 2AM last night trying to make it run the graphical interface, but cannot make it work :(

So I am hoping you guys will be able to help me, I have formatted an SD card, used the tool to write the Wheezy image file to the SD, put the SD into my Pi and then connected ethernet, hdmi, wireless mouse and keyboard, and power. It turns on, the lights start flashing, it seems to be okay. I get to the initial settings screen, at first I didn't change anything, clicked finish, logged in and typed 'startx'. The white Raspberry wallpaper loads, but no desktop icons or menus or anything. All it would let me do is right click, and switch desktop, the internet browser wouldn't work and neither would any other options.

I don't have a clue why it does this, I have read a couple of other people mentioning this problem, but I can't find an answer.

I have re flashed the SD card multiple times, used different SD cards, changed the power supply, used multiple different tv's (read it might be an issue with the tv resolution, tried adjusting that too though), I tried updating it too, and nothing I do will make it work!

I then tried Arch Linux, and couldn't manage to get a desktop to appear, even though I followed a guide to install lxde and run it, I got to the last stage and startx still wouldn't work!

Ideally, I would like to make it work on Wheezy, but I just can't figure out why it won't work! Please help me someone!

I wonder whether your LXDE desktop is extending beyond the edges of your physical display. It may be necessary to edit your config file to set the display resolution to ensure that the desktop is fitted to your display size. What screen are you using?

Also try turning Overscan on or off on the TV itself.

You may have better luck with Raspbian: http://debianarmpi.blogspot.co.uk

Arch does not use StartX by default: http://archlinuxpi.blogspot.co.uk

I have a 50" LG TV which I tried it on first, I used the Aspect setting to change it to original, 16:9, etc. and it still didn't show properly.

Then I tried it on a 42" Panasonic, tried adjusting the screen and it still showed the same.

Lastly, I tried it on a 22" Toshiba TV, and again the same problem.

I have only been using HDMI as the output, I have used different leads as well, but mostly the one that I bought from Farnell with my Pi.

Am I supposed to change the Overscan option on the intial start up? Because I haven't touched it so far, but surely after being tested on 3 TV's it should have worked on one... Is there a way to get the options screen back up again without flashing the SD again, I'm sure there is but I don't know how.

I'm back to Raspbian now, I was only using Arch just to see if I could get a desktop to work on another OS, it failed so I'm back to Wheezy.

I did follow a guide to get startx, or the equivelent to work on Arch though, it seemed to be running fine, until I had to type the command in at the end, as it didn't work.

Type raspi-config at the command prompt to launch the configuration menu..

Okay thank you!

One of my neighbours has invited my family around later for some drinks, and he has 2 raspberry pi's so he said he'll have a look at it for me. He works with computers for his job so hopefully he'll be able to give me some advice.

I'll let you know.

He didn't get time to look at it yesterday, so I'm going to try and work it out myself again.

So I have to change the overscan some how? I did try 3 TV's so surely one of them should have fitted it anyway?

Have a dip in the surf here http://elinux.org/R-Pi_Troubleshooting some overscan info at the bottom of the page. ;)

Hi I am experiencing exactly the same problem. After typing 'startx' I am presented with the Raspberry Pi wallpaper but no icons. Played with the overscan options in the config.txt file (edited SD card image in Windows) but this just resized wall paper within display but still no icons. So assuming this solution is headed up the wrong path. Possibly something missing from the X windows installation /setup? Followed all instructions from the recent quick start guide ( e,g, raspbian wheezy image). Using Dell monitor with HDMI to DVI connector. Any further pointers appreciated.

I have recently used start x on my raspberry pi. It has gone straight to the white screen. What shall I do next?

1dwb please let me know here if you find a solution, I don't have a clue what is wrong :(

What SD card are you using? Just seeing if I can narrow the problem down a bit.

I installed Raspmc fine, and that all works. So the Pi must be okay, it must be something to do with the Wheezy image? I don't know :?:

There is a fix to do with the changed 512Mb memory I am still on the old 256Mb but I'll look into this and put something on the wiki ;)

This change may be the cause of the problems.

Oh really? I have the 512mb version, I tried changing the overscan but ddin't really know what I was doing and ended up with a black screen.

I know how to stop the TV scanning, as there is options of '16:9', 'Just Scan', 'Zoom', 'Zoom 1', 'Original' etc. so I'll choose 16:9 or Original and see if I can make it work.

What lines of code might I need to add? If you let me know I'll test it for you, so you will know what to put on the wiki :)

There is a fully commented full version of config.txt here

https://raw.github.com/Evilpaul/RPi-con ... config.txt

Warning this is not for the faint hearted anything on a line that starts with a # is a comment ;)

So what needs to be uncommented then? I'm just formatting an SD now, I'll put Wheezy on it and paste the code into the config file

It's a trial and error thing obviously the screen setup you have loads of options under HDMI mode but you only use one at a time.

Like I said it's not for the faint hearted.

Obvioussly stv-mode you are only going to use the one for your TV setup
Europe
USA
Japan
Brazil

I don't know where in the world you are it's not in your profile. :D

I actually use "hdmi_force_hotplug=1"

For some reason the version of wheezy I am using keeps trying to use the RCA socket if I don't.

This can be useful because you can start yor RPi first then put the monitor on later and it's using the HDMI.

Normally if it does not detect the HDMI it defaults to RCA (the composite channel (yellow phono)) ;)

Try not to change too much at once. ;)

Ah that explains why it doesn't seem to work unless I have the HDMI cable plugged in, I'll definitely set that!

So I'll need to change the bottom overscan option to a minus number?

Edit: Okay, so I turned off overscan and set the HDMI force, and that gave me a completely full screen of the Raspberry Pi logo rather than having some black bars at the sides, but still no menu.

I'm sure it must be something else, as even right clicking, all I can do is change desktop nothing else works!

It hasn't been letting me update, it says 'Error running do_update' so I rm'ed /var/lib/dpkg/status
and then touched it, that seemed to fix the problem.

Then I installed tightvnc to see if I could get the screen working on there, and then that update failed.

What SD card are you using? Just seeing if I can narrow the problem down a bit.

I installed Raspmc fine, and that all works. So the Pi must be okay, it must be something to do with the Wheezy image? I don't know :?:
No not found solution yet. Yes I am using the new model B with 512 MB and a Lexar 8gb SDHC Card.

Hmm okay, so we both have the same Pi, the SD cards should be fine too.

That was the only thing I was a bit unsure of, but I don't see why yours would be wrong as well.

This is so annoying!
