A history lesson.
When conceived, the Pi was thought of as a great-grand-child of the BBC microcomputer, of which there were A and B versions - the B being better if not bigger than the A.
So the Pi came as a B, or chopped down as an A.
Now we just have the B
It has been stated that the original intent was to bring out the Model A first (hence the early slogan about a Linux system for $25). Those posting to the forums convinced the RPF that the features of the Model B were so important that it was released first, with the Model A some months later. Dr. Upton has stated that the Model A was his one failure, having sold "only" 100K of them. The replacement, the A+, did better. There was a stated intent to make a Pi2A, but that never happened. So now we have (in the smaller form factor), the A+ and the Pi3A+. Whether or not there will be a Pi4A, only time will tell. However, the B-series is not the only game in town when it comes to Pis.
