Openbox??

Mon Feb 03, 2020 2:36 pm

Hello RPI community,

Hope everyone is well!

Yesterday a curious thing happened where I right clicked on my desktop and noticed this option called "Openbox". I had never seen it or noticed it before last night. Well... as usual I opened it to see what it was about and discovered these cool theme and appearance setting that I've never seen before.

Ok. So I choose a theme and all the sudden I am no longer able to close windows with the X in the upper right corner of any window. Any window behind other windows also will not come to the fore when I click that window. Plus now, when I right click on my desktop, the option "Openbox" is no longer there!!!! Really weird. Nothing else seems out of the ordinary but this seems strange.

If any one knows how to disable this and get back to the good old classic window functions that I had before OpenBox took over, that would be wonderful! Thanks for checking this out and hope it helps others with the same issue!

Thanks for the reply!

Hmmmm...I just tried that, rebooted and no change. Really strange. I can't move windows around. None of the window tool bar buttons work. Also unable to size windows as well. Not sure what up.....

1st time using the scrot command
Just push the PrtSc button on your keyboard
The screenshot will appear in /home/pi.
Drag that to the message box when you reply to this topic.
If it's too big:
  • Compress it here then drag it to the message box.
  • Or Upload it to imagebb and then put the direct link to the image in [img] tags.

Try this:

Code: Select all

lxappearance
On the window border tab, select PiXflat, and then push Apply. See if that fixes it.

The Customize Look and Feel window should have changed it's window border from that black color to a dull grey as soon as you selected PiXflat. Once you pushed apply, all the other windows should have also changed to that grey color. If they didn't, then something is certainly wrong.

Yea, nothing has changed... can't move windows around. all the normal window functions are not working it seems. I don't understand where this Openbox thing came from and that I can't get back to the classic window functionality. Super annoying. Geeez....what now? update and upgrade? I'm surprised that the option is longer available when I right click on the deskktop and I can't find " Openbox" anywhere to disable it.. :|

That menu item was likely obconf. It sounds like your openbox configuration was somehow corrupted.
Try running obconf and changing your settings back.
If no success, this command renames openbox's config and openbox should be reset:

Code: Select all

mv /home/pi/.config/openbox /home/pi/.config/openbox.bak
Reboot after running that command.

Hey! I got it!!!

I simply right clicked the desktop and opened Desktop Preferences > Defaults ..

I then click the default button on all screen sizes and it seems to have reset the desktop appearance.

I'm gonna reboot and see if it sticks... standby..

Yes. Confirmed.

That works and all seems back to normal!

Yo, thanks for the help and your time. I really appreciate it.

Maybe that Openbox thing should be removed, discarded, whatever? Not sure how to do that, and it no longer appears as an option when I right click the desktop. But not trusting that thing again...

I'm still curious as to what it was. In the terminal:

Code: Select all

obconf
Does that look like what you saw in the first place?

Here's what I got with that command:

(obconf:2035): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: 12:28:36.366: gdk_pixbuf_fill: assertion 'GDK_IS_PIXBUF (pixbuf)' failed

(obconf:2035): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: 12:28:36.442: gdk_pixbuf_copy_area: assertion 'src_pixbuf != NULL' failed

I'll add that when I ran the command, Openbox dialog box opened, but I closed it before accidentally selecting a new appearance scheme...

OK good. I figured out what happened: pcmanfm crashed. Pcmanfm handles displaying the desktop and is the default file manager. Your desktop icons likely disappeared.
After killing pcmanfm, right-clicking results in a menu including ObConf. It appears you clicked Syscrash. Somehow the operbox configuration file got corrupted and so did not work properly.
Rebooting restarted pcmanfm, so that's why right-clicking couldn't reach ObConf any more.
Desktop Preferences overrides the configuration, and is annoying at times for that. But in your case it restored things as they should be.

If you want to select a different theme, I suggest you change it from lxappearance, not obconf. Lxappearance has more options and is usually less buggy.

Awesome.

Thanks for the tips. Thanks for working this out with me and I hope this helps to guide others that come up with the same issue. I'll be sure to use lxappearance to make those changes. I had no idea of that command and probably many others that can be useful. This stuff is deep, and I'm programmer! (web tech stuff tho). Would be nice to have place to discover/learn the commands, what they do and how to apply them. I've learned a lot today. Thank you thank you!

A week or so ago I had a similar experience. Clicking on desktop icons was having no effect, right-click on the desktop brought up some kind of "openbox" / "obconf" or related menu rather than what I was expecting. No "Desktop Appearance" option.

Don't know why it happened, nor recall exactly how I fixed it beyond rebooting, I think setting boot to command line then using 'startx', rebooting some more, maybe 'update/upgrade' via Telnet and then, after a final reboot, it just started working again.

That may have been Raspberry Pi Desktop on a PC rather than a Pi. Very weird.

Yes, happens to me occasionally when the file manager crashes. Sometimes the desktop icons freeze, other times they disappear. A reboot will autostart pcmanfm again, but if I'm in the middle of something I just run this in a terminal to start the desktop again:

Code: Select all

pcmanfm --desktop --profile LXDE-pi
