RPi 3b+ sd-card in a RPi 4

Tue Nov 26, 2019 1:59 pm

I have 90 RPi3B+ that my students use.
What will happen if I take one of the sd-cards from a RPi3B+ and put it in a RPi4.
Will everything work or do I have to create a new image for the sd-card?

It would be troublesome to have both models being used at the same time if the sd-cards would have to be different, and I dont want to throw 90 RPi3B+ away now when we need more units.

Images released alongside/after the pi4 should generally work fine on both, certainly the raspberry pi foundation raspbian images will.

If you are using an older image then you will need to update the kernel/firmware, what exactly this entails will depend on what you are running, if you are running a plain raspberry pi foundation raspbian buster image then a normal apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade should do it. If you are running a noobs based installation then you will also need to update the boot files in the noobs partition which will have to be done manually.
