USB powered hub or charging station to power Pi 4B cluster?

Sat Sep 28, 2019 7:48 pm

Can someone tell me if it's better to use a powered USB hub or a USB charging station to power a cluster of Raspberry Pi 4B's?

USB Charging station

The hub PSU supplies 2A. That may not be enough for even one Pi4B, depending on the peripherals connected to it.

The charger supplies 2.4A max per port, but only 12A total. That will support at least four Pi4B, up to six if the peripheral load is low. I do not know whether RAVPower supplies maintain their output voltage at full load current.

So the first is not suitable, the second might be, but not guaranteed.

I searched many charger and they all provided the standard 2.4A per port for USB. Is there a charging station that provides 3.0A per port? I need like 4-6 ports.

No idea. Unless you have more than 700mA going to peripherals on any Pi, 2.4A will be enough. Just watch the total -- the 12A supply only allows 5 ports at 2.4A.

The usual caveat which you will find repeated all over these forums applies. Chargers are not power supplies and may not perform adequately despite what might be stated on their labels or advertising material.

Just make your own power supply unit, like I did...

there are readily available components online.... plus some ingenuity on your part....
"Don't come to me with 'issues' for I don't know how to deal with those
Come to me with 'problems' and I'll help you find solutions"

Some people be like:
"Help me! Am drowning! But dont you dare touch me nor come near me!"

That hub is not up to the job. 2.5A (less power used by the hub) over seven ports is about enough for a cluster of zero/zeroW.

That charging station may work. It depends on how good the regulation is and whether it requires any negotiation with the device before it will provide the full current.

That said, I'd go with neither. I'd use an ATX PC PSU. Cheap, well regulated, and lots of current available.
Attempts to contact me outside of thes forums will be ignored unless signed in triplicate, sent in, sent back, queried, lost, found, subjected to public enquiry, lost again, and finally buried in soft peat for three months and recycled as firelighters
