Connecting devices wirelessly to Rpi

Thu Aug 22, 2019 11:40 am

Hi,

I a beginner and i am current on a project related to IOT.
I would like to connect devices such as bulb, fan, lock, etc wirelessly (either by wifi or bluetooth) to my Raspberry pi.
(I am using RPi 3 Model B+)

How can i accomplish it? Is it possible to do it with a wifi module? Or will a smart bulb/fan/lock works wirelessly with it?
I would like some suggestion, thank you.

Model B+ has no onboard Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. External device is necessary.

Model 3B+ has onboard Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Please can you state the exact model of Raspberry Pi ?

There is a selection of "Smart Home" software, most have recommendations for hardware:

I am so sorry for the wrong model i provided earlier, i have change it and the correct model is Rpi 3 Model B+.
Thank you so much for the link, i will watch through all of it. However, lets say if i am not using smart devices, is there anyway to connect normal bulbs/fans to the Rpi without jumpers?

Use a wireless router or access point.

The 3B+ connects to the router/AP wirelessly and all the IoT things connect to the router/AP as well.

Bluetooth devices can connect to the 3B+ directly rather than through a router/AP but the range is limited to 10 m indoors, typically.

If you want to connect something that does not have wireless networking or Bluetooth to the Pi, it would have to connect through some sort of adapter that allows the device connected to the adapter to be controlled over Ethernet, wireless or Bluetooth, like a wireless-controlled power outlet.
